Suicide simply means ‘killing oneself’. The act constitute a person willingly taking his or her own life. Suicide is a type of deliberate self harm and is defined as a human act of self-intentioned and self-inflicted cessation of life (death) whereas Deliberate Self Harm (DSH) is an act of intentionally injuring one self, irrespective of the actual outcome.
Definition of Terms:
An Attempted suicide --- means an unsuccessful suicidal act with a non fatal outcome whereas Completed suicide --- means the person successfully died.
A suicidal gesture --- refers to attempted suicide characterized by a low-lethality method, low level of intent or planning, and little physical damage. Pseudocide is another term for a suicide gesture.
Suicide gamble --- this refers to an attempt by patients to gamble with their lives with the intention that they will be found in time; often times the individual ingest a fatal amount of drugs with the belief that family members will be home before death occurs. A suicide equivalent----involves a situation in which the person does not attempt suicide; instead behaves in a way to get respond that suicide would have caused. For instance, running away from home wanting to see how parents respond (do they really care?)
