Tension In Jos - Over Alleged Fresh Attack by Nobody: 7:34am On Feb 13, 2009
FOLLOWING inciting leaflets circulating around Jos, the capital of Plateau State, signifying another violence, an air of aprehension has gripped the residents of the city.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the tension in the city was further heightened by the rumour of alleged silent killings in some parts of the tin city.

It was alleged that bodies of two young men murdered by unknown killers were found around Congo-Russia area of the city, in the early hours of Thursday.

According to an undated letter signed by one Idris Ibn Mohammed on behalf of “Joint Islamic Committee (JIC)” calling for a total Jihad against the government of the state because of the unfulfilled promises that were made to the Jasawa Association by previous administrations.

The letter further stated that previous administrations in the state had promised Jasawa the creation of chiefdom for the Hausa/Fulani community within Jos, and had also promised to install an Emir for the community, and to create a local government area out for the present Jos North for the Hausas, with its headquarters in Angwan-Rogo, among others which were not met.

The author stated that part of the promises of the previous adminstration was to compensate the Hausa/Fulani for their contributions to the economic development of the state, even though they are still being marginalised.

When contacted, Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPPA) to Governor Jonah Jang, Mr. James Mannok, confirmed the rumour, but added that police were already looking into the matter, with the aim of fishing out those behind the inciting leavelets in circulation.
Going round the town Nigerian Tribune noticed that anti-riot police men had been drafted to all strategic parts of the town.

All attempts by the Nigerian Tribune to speak with the state Comissioner of Police and the State Police Public Relations Oficer were unsuccessful as both of them were said to be out of their offices.

Meanwhile, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3rd Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Major General Sale Maina, had toured military checkpoints mounted around the city to ensure that they were prepared for any eventuality.
