Some women from the South-Western part of Nigeria on Sunday appealed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to abandon the incoming President, Muhammadu Buhari, as the latter would need to share from his experience to ensure good governance when he takes over on May 29.

The women led by the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Alaba Lawson, made the call when they visited Mr. Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta. They said Mr. Obasanjo still has lot of work to be done for the betterment of the country.

Mrs. Lawson lamented that the nation is experiencing corruption, high crime rate, lack of electricity and fuel scarcity. She noted that the former president, who supported Mr. Buhari during the elections, should assist the president-elect to succeed as Nigeria’s leader.

“We are aware that you also took over the reins of power of this country at a critical time and with the help of the Almighty, you were able to bring us back from the brink,” she said. “The same goes for now. We therefore appeal to you not to leave this upcoming government alone.”
“Though we are confident in the time proven abilities of our incoming President, General Muhammed Buhari, we also believe that two heads are better than one and where there is gathering of wise ones, wisdom will issue forth from there. So Your Excellency, we believe that you still have a lot to offer from your wealth of experiences and we know that you will humour us.

“We pray that you will finish what you have started, now that you have ensured that a government which you know will take care of the masses has been elected.”

In his response, the former president said Nigeria and Nigerians have a “new opportunity” in the coming administration to make the country work again.

Mr. Obasanjo noted that the new opportunity is God-given. He pointed out that the “good things” about the next administration is that the man that would head it is neither “a green – horn nor a novice” in governance.

He said Mr. Buhari was once in the saddle before, even if it was under a “different circumstance” and would use his experience to navigate the country to the path of right direction.

The former President also advised Mr. Buhari to be honest and truthful with Nigerians. He said expectations are high of the in-coming government while it also enjoys a lot of good will from Nigerians and the international community.

The former president urged Mr. Buhari “not to be frightened” by the enormous expectations and the daunting challenges in the country.

Apart from Mrs. Lawson, others among the visitors included the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Folashade Tinubu–Ojo; Olabisi Sangodoyin; and Oyin Sowoolu.
