Permit to comment and please know I mean no disrespect to you and your opinion

With respect to your comment, I find it flawed because many of us today are Passing . Over. Opportunities . Repeatedly (POOR).

Read an article today where the owner and founder of Alibaba (Jack Ma) who said and i quote, "If you are poor at 35, you deserve it" and it got me thinking that many of us the youths would rather spend our productive time doing unproductive things from watching football or TV shows or something else rather than reading up on the latest trends in the world, how to solve problems, understand a business idea that has been proffered to them or attend a business class that will be of benefit to them. It's just crazy.

Been guilty of this and I decided a while back when someone opened my eyes to take responsibility for my future and shape it because my parents desires are now my turn offs and the same is likely to happen with my kids.

Case in point, picture this, it was a pride and Joy for our parents to work in manufacturing industries/schools/civil service(NITEL, Former NEPA etc) in those days. However, most of our generation today do not want that. Our desire is for banks, Telecoms companies, oil companies etc. Some say God forbid with thoughts of offers like the ones parents enjoyed.

The offices and companies your children would work or buy over in the next 15-20 years have not been birthed yet. They would also say God forbid to the MTN's, Zenith Banks, etc you crave for today

I have found my own UBER, my own oil well and am ready to share it with all who are interested. The question is, ARE YOU INTERESTED?

SUCCESS LOVES SPEED
Em sorry to ask you this but how does Jack Ma the founder of Ali Baba define poor?.

It's usually sad when people say 'Nigerian youths are lazy, we want the government to do everything for us.' it is this saying that turned Nigeria into what it has become. We make excuses for the government, we celebrate mediocrity and we don't stand up for our right. Last I heard, democracy is the government of the people by the people for the people. So if we have the faintest inclination that the people we have elected into government are not performing up to expectation, I don't think it is wrong to question or rebuke them. After all they are paid to serve and if they do not justify their pay, they should be brought to book.

An important orientation that affects many of us is that all our efforts are channelled to surviving. We are all driven by the sheer will to get out of poverty but at the end of it all, we still end in poverty. Many youths start business just to 'survive'. This is the wrong reason to start a business because you are actually not thinking of meeting peoples' needs but to enrich yourself hence, double standards, inferior products, cheating and incompetence is the other of the day. Can we all become entrepreneurs? Can everyone create an app? I once asked a friend of mine why are you enrolled in a PhD program, he replied 'I want to avoid searching for a job.' This is a very wrong motive. I can say that after he becomes a doctor of philosophy, he might never add anything worthwhile to the body of knowledge in his field because he is only interested in making money, not improving lives with his knowledge. This is a very wrong way to live life.

In Nigeria where electricity, good roads, pipe borne water, health facilities and basic amenities of life are lacking, what is the hope for the future? I stand to be corrected, I categorically declare that Nigeria is the most expensive country to live in. I came to this conclusion because this country is the only place where you actually pay for services and you do not get value for your money and if you complain, no one cares. You pay taxes but the government can't provide social amenities, telecommunication companies reap you off and NCC does nothing, You pay for dstv and no power to watch what you paid for, you have to generate power your self. Government has failed to enforce rules and regulations put in to safeguard the interest of the citizenry, meanwhile these laws were enacted by the so called government. So as citizens of this country, what do we have to enjoy? Hardship? Struggles? Lack?

We have to stand up and fight for what is ours. We have to keep tackling people in government so that we can secure the future of our children and great grand children. We are suffering now because our parents and grand parents refused to fight and tackle previous governments. As youths we owe it to the future to work hard, fight for ourselves, tackle the government with everything we have got, if not, the problems we are facing today will continue to plague us.

We need each other to survive. The government need the people and people need the government. God will not do what we can do for ourselves. God will not come down and manage the wealth of this nation for us. We have to do it ourselves. Therefore let us come together and make Nigeria great.

I hate when people generalize people into categories just to suit their point of view. Poverty in Nigeria is a serious case and it doesn't just exist at the youth level alone. In the article I see references to a few Nigerians that made it out of the poverty due to God, luck and hard work but for every 1 of them, I can count a 1,000 who failed, it's not that God was not their side nor were they cursed or lazy but when you put people into unfavorable circumstances and expect them to excel then the probability of success is very low.

Based on the article, one would suggest Nigerian youths are the laziest in the world but if you've seen what I've seen you might just bite your tongue and have a rethink. Come to America and I'll show you rotten youths, youths hooked on drugs, youths obsessed with gang related activities and so on, the statistic is alarming! One would easily abandon such youths and tag them as failures but the American society operates on a different level, it is a society which believes that people can be redeemed if equipped with proper elements not only for survival but for long term success. From education to healthcare, no matter the amount of debt, youths are given chances upon chances to succeed.

Now Mr. Bayo, can the same be said of the Nigerian society? Let's forget about the government, what about the private sector? What have they done to redeem the Nigerian youth? What about celebrities? What have they done to help the common man? Before we condemn our youths, let's ask ourselves what we've done to make the situation better!

Mr Bayo has tried but is still, sadly, a mono-causalist struggling to sway the crowd with a thousand examples of the same one premise whilst we needed at least 30-40 ddifferent solutions from him on issues like dis.

He piled d blames on Naija youths forgetting d teeming millions busy hawking pure water on the streets, the almajiris etc who just been disenfranchised and denied of meaningful platforms and pro-deelopmental springboards.

The Nigeria of today's a very unforgiving uncaring one. Like irresponsible parents whelping offspring without fostering plans, the Naija leadership of today seems more geared for genocide rather than mentoring and nation-building.

Injustice is always a precursor to violence. Mr Bayo OP should be glad Nigerian youths of a resilient forbearing nature preferring instead to forge ahead instead of ttake-to-arms in senseless wars and purges like some of our African counterparts.

Who dey comment occupationally sef? Nor be when people dey inside holdups etc we dey get time to comment here and there? If u nor work here, you nor go chop o, no food for lazy man.

Mr OP, bring us action plans for youth empowerment, employment and social entrepreneurship on a sustenable level make we talk not all these your accusatory finger-pointing posturing. Let's talk on practically on Reworking our educational curriculum to producing graduates with marketable Skills geared to innovation, technological problem-$olving etc and we'll believe you.

But all dis esoteric geekspeak philosophical head-wagging?! :PTaaaah, you are On your Own!

Naija youths son ssuffer enuf bashing, abeg!

The truth is that the writer is right about everything he wrote up there...... but with our coward attitude,I still read some comments that is saddening to see some people excluding themselves from the message the writer is sending...

some elders even believe they are too old to take a buoyant step while the youth are complaining of no time or opportunity....

Well it has been said. Change is needed

God bless the OP. Majority of Nigerian youths are annoyingly stupid. Theyy would rather spread and believe false information with their mobile phone, rather than use the same mobile phone to validate and check the authenticity of the information being spread. That's how intellectuall challenged, most Nigerian youths are. It's a pity I was born in this same generation. The older generation didn't have as much technologyy as we have today, but they are more educated and intelligent than the youths of today. This is because today's generation, are predominantly made up of dummies;only a few are worth calling humans.

Angry Letter to the Nigerian Youth

By Bayo Adeyinka

My dear Nigerian Youth,

I am very angry and that is why I am addressing you. You are the source of my anger and I want to vent my spleen- maybe not at you directly- but at the arrogance of your ignorance. Of all nations of the world, you are to be most pitied. Do you still wonder what you have done?

You don’t have an Ivy League education but with the little below-standard education you got, all you could do with it is to write a petition against someone with the benefit of an Ivy League education. You can’t even run your personal economy as you’re almost always and perpetually broke yet you arrogate to yourself superior knowledge about the nation’s economy.

You sit in front of a computer and rant all day through social media but with every click, you make money- not for yourself- but for Mark Zuckerberg. With every megabyte of data you spend complaining and maligning, you make stupendous bucks for Etisalat, Glo and Airtel.

Over the next two years, the number of Nigerian millionaires will jump by 47% but most likely you will not be among because you are too busy whining and complaining. And yet about 60% of Nigeria’s 170m population are below 35 years. Oh, what a waste!

By the way, Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he started facebook. Africa’s youngest billionaire, Ashish Thakkar, is 31. He escaped from the Rwandan genocide and relocated to Uganda where he started an IT business. Collin Thornton, who made his millions by fixing bad computers and setting up Dial-a-Nerd, is 35. Adam Horowitz, an 18-year-old entrepreneur, started 30 websites in 3 years before he became successful.

The only thing you have ever started is an online petition. Have you heard of Jason Njoku? He’s 33 and the founder of Iroko TV. He received $8m investment into his company just a few years ago. What he does? Sharing the same Nollywood films that you spend hours to watch online. He didn’t just hang around waiting for Buhari to make something happen or blaming Jonathan for not making anything happen.

Kamal Budhabhatti was deported from Kenya but while on the flight, he thought of the opportunities in Kenya. He found his way back after 6 months and today his company is valued at $30m. He’s 36. Have you heard of Chinedu Echeruo? Apple just paid $1b for his app. He’s a Nigerian like you and all he did was attempt to fix a problem.

But for you, the only thing you attempt to fix are your nails- and your hairdo! Chinedu moved to New York in 1995 and found it difficult to navigate the city with ease so he developed HopStop to fix the problem. Stop listing all the problems- we know them already but what are you doing about them?

Awolowo was 37, Akintola was 36, Ahmadu Bello was 36, Tafawa Balewa was 34, Okotie-Eboh was 27 and Enahoro was 27 at the time of independence of Nigeria. In 1966, the first coup was led by Kaduna Nzeogwu (29) and stopped by Murtala Mohammed (28), TY Danjuma (28), IBB (25), Sanni Abacha (23) and Shehu Yaradua (23). It brought in Yakubu Gowon as Head of State at 32 and Obasanjo at 29. You are in your 40s and you still sag your trousers.

Of course you know Linda Ikeji. You’ve spent hundreds of hours on her blog laughing and commenting while she smiles her way to the bank. She’s just built a house for her father in the village- just by you clicking on her gossip and sharing. Your day is not complete without a stop by at her blog. She was as broke as you are but she turned a hobby into a business. Are you that void of understanding?

You think the politicians have any regard for you? That is why I referred to the arrogance of your ignorance at the beginning of this diatribe. You have a false estimation of yourself. You have an over bloated ego. You are only as good as an election ticket- pure and simple.

You are only good to used and discarded like a used ballot paper. Who keeps a used ballot paper anyway? That is why they only remember you every four years. You are like a menstrual pad that is only useful during the menstrual period. Are you hurt? Okay, let me help you. Have you heard of Prof Olusola Adeyeye before?

He is a Senator of the Federal Republic at the moment. But before he became a senator, he was popular on facebook. Even more popular than so many latter day facebookivists. I was one of his many followers. He put up posts after posts and pander to populist thinking. Then he was elected and one of the first things he did was to deactivate his facebook account. Yes, you read me right. Deactivate. How many times do you still see El-Rufai’s tweets? No longer regular? That is how it will dwindle until he disappears totally. I’m not limiting it to the aforementioned alone and this is not about any party. They are all the same.

Yet you falsely believe your future is in the hands of one politician. You will grow grey hair with that belief. And by the time you wise up, you’re on your way to the grave- not with a life expectancy of less than 60 years in this clime. Can you see you have wasted your time? And possibly your life? See, people have been complaining since independence. And they will still complain in 4 years. Will you be among them?

I agree with my friend who said Nigerian youth need mental detoxification. And maybe I should add that you need a brain transplant. Let me give you another example. I’ve watched you try to pull some people down when you don’t like their face- or their comments. You report them to facebook. And they get pulled down. Momentarily. Just momentarily.

Do you know why? Facebook knows those people draw traffic. Their posts get huge numbers of comments. And with every comment and click, someone is making money. Will you allow your best customers to leave? That is why though facebook pulled down Adeyinka Grandson’s page, he was given a facebook fan page in return. Yes, a fan page. You need to get a job and you need to get a life. There is life away from facebook or social media.

If you’re not making money from social media and you sleep on it, you’re merely existing- you’re not living. I have seen some of you take selfies and pose in all manner of ways as you paste your photos on social media. Are you a photographer or are you selling something that we don’t know? You’re unemployed because you’re unemployable. You don’t have skills. Sorry, the major skill you have is that of pointing out the problems and debating about them. That’s a no brainer! You can’t even diagnose the problems properly.

You think Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala is your problem? You are a self-inflicted problem. You are afflicted with yourself and by yourself. If you’re looking for the reason why you are the way you are- look no further than your mirror. Instead of occupying Nigeria, you should occupy your brain. The only witch chasing you from your village is you. It’s time to stop bewitching yourself.

Stop whining about lack of electricity or fuel. Do something about it. Every adversity has a seed of opportunity embedded in it. Create something. Invent something. Start something. Read up a book. Write a book. Take advantage of the present situation. Nigeria is a huge market. Nigeria is a virgin market. Waiting for you. Unleash yourself. Release your passion. Follow your potential. Invent your way to prosperity. Stop waiting for government- government only needs you when they need your taxes. Don’t depend on welfare. People who depend on welfare don’t fare well.

You think you lack capital? No, the problem is not lack of capital but lack of ideas. Just today, two men stepped into my wife’s office selling the new portraits of Buhari and Osinbajo. That’s someone grabbing an opportunity and seizing the moment. I have a friend who started out by offering after-school lessons to kids on her street- now she has a school.

I know a lady who was indigent and self-sponsored on campus. Each night, she soaked beans and made ‘moin-moin’ in the morning for sale on campus. I bought out of the moin moin as well as some other students and that was how she paid her way through University. Not prostitution. Have you heard of Ayodeji Megbope? She started her business with the last N1,000 she had on her by making moin moin. She is the CEO of No Leftovers.

I have shared the story of ‘Akara Ayo’ and invited him to talk to us before. He left his banking job to start a business frying Akara (bean cake) in Ibadan. And added some innovation to it.

Start a snail farm. You can start it with less than N100,000. I started it with nothing- I just picked up snails in my compound and raised them. In a couple of months, I had raised close to a thousand. You have a car and you are complaining you don’t have a job? Convert it for car hire. Take it to the airports and see how people will hire it for the day. Liase with good hotels and place it at their disposal. I met a young man in Calabar who charges N1,500 per hour for the use of his car. There is something in your hand that can give you the future you want. The best moment to start is now.

For God’s sake, just do something!

NB: This is just an article to stir up and challenge people and it’s intention is not derogatory in any form.

Op I kinda agree with what you are saying but you elders are partly to blame, when we were younger everything we did fell under so much scrutiny and distaste. It has always been do as you are told, even now we can't even marry if you are uncomfortable with petty attributes like tribe or status. You see a child doing something he loves its "STOP THAT! STUDY HARD, READ YOUR BOOKS, FINISH SCHOOL AND BECOME A BANKER OR DOCTOR OR AN ENGINEER etc. most of us have done as you have told but where are jobs and life promised us? you brain washed us and disabled most of us ability to think outside the box, and since already we have little or no influence in the economy which u control we do what we can to let u know about our situation and that's why u see us on the social media. However, you are wrong if u think the youths aren't doing something a lot of us run very small scale businesses kept mostly alive by the same social media, because some of your economic factors aren't exactly ideal. You were the ones who raised us, you are the ones to be blamed for the current state of the economy, but don't worry we will save it, if anything most of us are aware of the cause.

@op please do me a favour and remove IBB and Co from that list, I don't have faith in the Fraud called Nigeria. Besides why are you comparing Nigerian youths to Youths of Developed countries, check the meaning of Developed and get back to me. I don't support you 100%, you and I know that people like Obj, TY Dànjuma,IBB and co destroyed this country. A useless Government that allocated oil blocks to themselves, oil that was meant for the development of Nigeria angry Seriously there is absolutely no hope for the Nigerian Youths in Nigeria, have you ever wondered why Nigerian Youths excel in Foreign Countries because the Governments aren't as backward as ours. Please never you compare this dead country to Developed Countries of the world, we need a revolution in this Country. All former Heads of States and thieves needs to die by hanging.

Yes o, he wants you to create an App through magic. Am so upset going to work for like a week now has been so stressful, no light,no fuel, banks aren't working and I found it so difficult to make calls yesterday. Our refineries aren't working and some idiotic Nigerians that allocated oil wells to themselves went to build refineries in other countries, when my friend anaylized the whole thing to me yesterday I was so upset. All Nigerian leaders will die a shameful death, whoever is behind the pain of innocent Nigeriàns will die a shameful death.

Seriously I have been wondering how people are still able to cope with the cost of megabytes just chatting without tapping into the unlimited opportunities online. And majority claim to be unemployed. For me I socialize online but makes money alongside. Just this comment alone is sure to get me more money. You want to know how? Chat me here on
