The out-going President, Jonathan Goodluck, has released N5 billion out of the expected N9.2 billion for the purchase of 750,000 new stoves for the Northern rural women.

The project is expected to be inaugurated today in Abuja.

The Minister of Environment, Laurentia Mallam, during an inspection visit to the Velodrome at the National Stadium, Abuja, where some of the 750,000 stoves were being assembled, said the project will go a long way in discouraging desertification and the use of firewood in the rural areas of the North.

She said: “We started in the northern parts of the country because of the challenges we are facing there with the desert encroaching into the country and people still cut down trees.

“Now, the President wants it to spread throughout the country and so we have this project.

“The ministry has received N5 billion so far. You know when N9.2 billion was approved by the Federal Government last year, we told Nigerians that N9.2 billion has been approved by the Federal Government. But so far, N5 billion has been released to the ministry.

“We have given the contractor 15 per cent, which is N1.3 billion. That is what we have released to the contractor and we still have N3.7 billion in the ministry’s account.”

Last minute looting. Money that can be used to address more important issues for Nigeria they are wasting on so-called stoves for rural women. Why not also release money for the kerosene and also for the food that they will use the stove to cook?

Why now. Last minute contract arrangement. They have used China to destabilise this country.small time now the 'contractor' will start shipping substandard stoves from china and 70% of that money will be unaccounted for. The only reason they are starting with the north is so that buhari will not probe them. But dem no sabi buhari. We are waiting....

How did you define clueless ?

That money would have been looted if not for the fear of probe, why is this so off the original delivery schedule and what happens to the remaining N4b? Is this our priority and is this the best way to spend N9b on desertification? What about development of industry for non-wood forest products like Neem which will fight desertification and boost the northern economy at the same time?

This was clearly supposed to be a phantom project.

I am sure that this clueless Jonathan will sign a contract on the eve of his final departure.

I won't be too surprised to read something like the following on May 28th:

1. Jonathan sacks NDDC chairman, appoints another.

2. Jonathan awards new contract for 10 billion naira

3. Jonathan budgets 500 million naira for his feeding while out of presidency.

His cluelessness knows no bounds!
