Fashola Declares May 27 Every Year As Lagos Day(daily Independent) by Nobody: 4:34pm On May 28, 2015
THE outgoing governor of Lagos State,
Babatunde Fashola , on has declared
May 27 of every year as Lagos Day to
further celebrate Lagos State and its
citizens .
Fashola , who signed an Executive Order
to this effect , on Wednesday May 26 ,
2015 , declared this at a reception
organised to celebrate some citizens of
Lagos , who in one way or the other, had
contributed to the development of
Lagos by a group called Spirit of Lagos .
“ If you have seen me over the last eight
years behind Fanty and Eyo carnivals, it
is not because that is the job of the
governor, it is because that is part of
my history and nobody should take us
for granted .
“ For those who might not know, the
Oba of Lagos once withstood and
fought the might of the British forces in
Lagos .
“ We love peace but we will defend
ourselves whenever it becomes
necessary to do so.
“ The strength of our diversity is
extremely unique and we must tell that
story to generations unborn. We have
an identity and history of Lagos ,”
Fashola said .
Speaking shortly before the declaration,
the governor explained that, “ Today is
the day that Lagos State was created in
1967 .
“ In order for our children to grow and
understand the culture, language ,
tradition and food of Lagos.
“ While celebrating our children every
May 27 , we shall also be
commemorating Lagos with a
celebration of Lagosness. Lagos
wouldn’ t have been the Centre of
Excellence without Lagosians.
“ So, by the power vested on me as the
governor of Lagos State, I Babatunde
Raji Fashola , declare every 27 th day of
May as Lagos Day”
Fashola , at the event, also
commissioned the Lagos hall of fame
where he honoured Josephine Agu, the
Airport cleaner who returned money she
found while on duty ; Vitalis Agigwe,
who despite his disability due to road
accident , had taken it upon himself to
train people in engineering and set up
an organisation to take care of road
accident victim.
Also in the Hall of Fame are Laja
Adedoyin of Heart of Gold Children
Hospice and Lanre Adio.
