Why is it so?
Is there a law restricting them from being appointed as ADC?

Enlighten me please.

Because they are not land forces, and as thus might not be very battle equipped and skilled to counter a ground force or imminent force against Mr. President.....

But for me, I happen not to be a military personnel, but pay me the kind of money you pay dem, u'll surprise at my skills and prowess in mortal, exoteric and spiritual combats ..... smiley

Which means that it is just the presidents choice not to appoint them.
And that they (presidents) can appoint them (navy/airforce) if the desire? @ raymondenyi

That's a recent development (most likely because we only had army heads of state during military rule). Nnamdi Azikiwe had army, navy and air force ADCs (3). Ironsi also had 3 ADCs. President Obama has 5 ADCs (there are 5 uniformed armed services in the US).

NAF or NN are not a choice for ADC. Their training are quite different from the Army. NA are trained to engaged on land and that's why they have the largest force.
An Army soldier is trained to counter any aggressions arising from ground attacks.
It's the Army only that fights Man-to-Man while the others fights Plane-to-plane and Ship-to-ship. So, the FIRST contact is the Army. Army undergoes more training than AF or N.

It's possible to have more than one ADC. Air Force Captain Andrew Nwankwo was also Ironsi's ADC (he was present when Ironsi was kidnapped). Lieutenant Sani Bello of the Army was also his ADC.

President Obama has 5 full time ADCs - one each from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Coast Guard.

I don't know about other countries, but in Nigeria, Army, Airforce and Navy training is the same at the basic school, be it commissioned officers cadre or nco cadre. So, you're not correct.

lol... You get everything quite twisted. I am not saying that their training isn't quite the same at the basic level, but what am implying is that, their training(enemies) are different, their rule of engagement are different. So, the Army is the First contact for ADC as they are more atuned to it.

President Obama's ADC (Marine)

In Nigeria the tradition that the Commander in Chief is assigned a military ADC was inherited from the British (the British Monarch has several ADCs and the colonial Governors/Governors General also had ADCs).

The United States was also colonised by the British, but their tradition of assigning a military ADC to the Commander in Chief could be traced back to General George Washington who retained his ADC when he became the first President of the US.

The US President has five military ADCs, one from each branch of the five uniformed armed services of the US. There is a top secret roster that specifies which of the ADCs will be with the President at any given time.

An ADC must be near the President at all times, because one of the duties of the ADC is to carry the nuclear football.

US Marine Lieutenant Colonel David Kalinske was President Obama's Marine ADC until 2010. Interestingly, Colonel Kalinske was a footballer in school and he ended up carrying the most important football in the world for the US President.

1) President Obama with David Kalinske and his family.

2) President Obama with David Kalinske and family on Colonel Kalinske's last day as the President's ADC.

Bill Clinton's ADC (Air Force)

The duties of the US President's ADC, beyond carrying the emergency nuclear satchel (nuclear football), includes assisting the President at military events, such as wreath laying ceremonies and inspection of honour guards.

The President's ADC is known as his elbow man because he has to be close to the President at all times. The President has several other aides, including his Personal Aide (Personal Assistant) who is known as his body man. President Obama referred to his Personal Aide, Reggie Love, as his "iReggie", a play on Apple's iPad (“I have an iReggie, who has my books, my newspapers, my music all in one place.”). The ADC takes up the duties of the Personal Assistant whenever he is not around.

President Bill Clinton's Air Force ADC from 1996-1998 was Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson.

Question: So, how come I never saw GEJ's ADC carrying an emergency Nuclear Football?

Answer: His primary duty was to carry GEJ's Ogogoro's briefcase. grin

Nigeria does not have any nuclear weapons.

What you would have seen in the past (especially during the Babangida era) was a bagman. There was always one near General Babangida and Admiral Aikhomu.

A military officer told me something about this bagman. He said the bagman always go anywhere the President goes, and this bagman stays somewhere he can't be seen. Also the bag contains codes/instructions concerning bombs.

But the way he said it seemed like it still exist.

Please how true is this?

You are talking crap! Their trainings are basically the same these days, apart from specialist areas! The basic trainings are enough to allow anyone serve as an ADC in sane climes! The Nigerian Army tends to bully the other services! Period!

Army operates on ground while Navy and Air force operate on sea and air respectively. Our presidents are terrestrial being not aquatic or air being. They rule on terrestrial ground where the Army is in charge .
Our Nigeria Army is ranked on of the best in the world in terms of bravery and tactics. They might be short of latest weapons. But in their bravery, you can't beat them.
