I don't want to be critical but I think the Ministry of Labour and Productivity should have been given this responsibility. A department for Wealth Creation and Employment could be established within the said Ministry. Why does Gov Ambode have to add more responsibilities on Lagos recurrent expenditure in the face of financial decline?

I also don't think this is a good move. It's unnecessary duplication of duties and responsibilities.

Focusing on employment is crucial. Unemployment is too much.
But a ministry would mean more bureaucracy and huge cost.

I guess a department directly under the governor would be better. But at least he sees the urgency of it.

You olodos there is no ministry of labour at the state level only at the Federal level so he is not duplicating it by creating ministry if employment. You guys have forgotten this man has been in the system for decades and no one knows it better than him

I think the guy is doing exactly what you suggested; industrialization and commercialization. I think the new ministry will ease the effect of official bottleneck on start-up entrepreneur. while the ministry of Labour and productivity attend to civil servants, I think this new ministry would attend to teeming unemployed youths

You are probably jumping into hasty conclusions here. I did not read anywhere in the statement that the Ministry of Employment is a place people will go to collect job application forms.

I suspect the ministry's task will be to help develop job creation ideas working with the private sector, and coordinating other ministries to ensure that government policies are conducive to the expansion of a job - creating economy. Even in the UK, there is a separate Minister of Employment.

As for the new office of 'Overseas ...and whatever,' again, I think this could be a very meaningful addition. Bringing down some of the barriers to doing business in Lagos is not something to sniff at. There are a lot of obstacles to doing business in Lagos. If the new office can work with the private sector and government departments to reduce some of these challenges, then this will be a very positive development for businesses.

The key is execution. If the new offices deliver on their objectives, it's a win for Lagosians.

You made some good points because I agree unemployment can't be tackled in one fell swoop. Its a problem that can be solved through tackling other problems like industrialisation and all.

Be that as it may, specialisation is key. Some ministries are overburdened with roles, yet have little funds to meet all of them. Carving out ministries at low budgetary costs that will address specific problems isn't a bad idea. Ministry of employment doesn't necessarily mean their raison d'etre is to eliminate unemployment. Other indices are needed to achieve that. However they can help reduce the bottlenecks that is present in the labour market through ensuring the availability of labour market information, checking the activities of employers against unethical employment processes, and the setting of a workable blueprint to ensure a free, fair environment that elevates merit above mediocrity.

Moreover, buhari is even planning to reduce d number of ministries at federal level, & here we have someone trying to create more, & u think it should be applauded?

Governments can only create veritable grounds dat will serve as incentives for our investors & magnet for foreign investors, which will eventually lead to employment. Call it pessimism. I see nothing efficacious about creating new ministries, calling it ministry of employment still won't provide jobs for d overwhelming population of d unemployed.

This was the reason they never gave us a direction of their policies. They never told us about the kind of policy the intend to initiate and implement, not to talk about the direction the policy should take.

Just a day after inauguration, we're beginning to hear funny policies of an APC government that intends to right the wrongs of the PDP!

Now we know the direction of Lagos State Government's policy on wealth creation and employment (duplicating functions with the Ministry of Labour, we know that of the Federal Government's policy direction on security (by moving the Command & Control center from a non-combat zone - Abuja - to a combat zone - Maiduguri - can someone please tell us the policy direction on Power, Foreign Relationship, Transportation, Infrastructure, Finance?
