A man in northeast China’s Shenyang city bought
a vehicle worth 680,000 yuan (around 109,700 US
dollars) on Tuesday, paying around 660,000 yuan
(106,480 US dollars) in coins.
According to the Liaoshen Evening News, the
coins weighed four tons and piled up for over four
meters. It took over 10 employees more than one
hour to move all of them into the store.
The buyer, surnamed Gan, said that busses that
stopped to refuel at the gas station where he
works usually paid in coins. Given that there is no
bank in the vicinity, he decided to collect and
store the coins.
“We have been receiving the coins for nearly three
months. As our station is in the suburb, there are
very few banks. Thus, we did not deposit and
decided to use them to buy a car for our
company,” he explained.
But that explanation hasn’t gone down well with
many on social media in the country.
“These people are so selfish. They only seek their
own convenience, but pay no attention to trouble
it may cause others. Do they live in the
mountains? Don’t they have any single bank
nearby? Is it even impossible to deposit them
once per week, or per month?” said a Sina Weibo
user named.
