Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to commence a “prompt, independent and effective investigation” of former and serving service chiefs for their responsibility in war crimes during the fight against Boko Haram in the North- East. The organisation said that these crimes included the killing of 8,000 persons, who were “murdered, starved, suffocated and tortured to death.” AI identified those to be tried for these alleged crimes as former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.); former Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim (retd.); Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; and Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah. The organisation said it had also petitioned the International Criminal Court with a request for their prosecution for war crimes in Nigeria.AI’s demand is contained in a report entitled, ‘Stars on their shoulders, Blood on their hands: War crimes committed by the Nigerian military’, released on Wednesday in Abuja. During the tenure of these men, Boko Haram seems to be in their worst nightmare and their existence gradually diminished at large. Why persecute these men instead of a congratulatory message for a job well done? They should investigate the Biafra war instead. |
