2011 Elections: Senators demand automatic tickets Taiwo Adisa, Group Political Editor - 17.02.2009 THE proposal by the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, which seeks to issue automatic second-term tickets to governors, appears to be causing ripples within the ranks of the party as senators and members of the House of Representatives are equally demanding automatic tickets for their second term. The PDP Governors’ Forum had submitted a proposal seeking automatic tickets to serving governors and the president, if a member of the party. They claim that the governors should not be made to face party primaries as a mark of respect for their positions and offices. But investigations in Abuja on Monday revealed that a number of senators had mandated the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, to meet with the party hierarchy and demand the same treatment for senators It was learnt that before the senators would agree to the proposal by the governors, they too have to be assured that they will benefit from the proposal. A senator told the Nigerian Tribune: “We are not opposed to what is being proposed, what we are saying is that the governors cannot have it all alone. If the governors would have automatic tickets, then they should extend it to the senators and members of the House of Representatives. Maybe, after two terms, they can then be made to face primaries as a check on their popularity.” It was gathered that Mark was being inundated with requests and calls to take up the matter with the leadership of the party. The proposed amendment to Article 9.2(iv) of the PDP Constitution reads: “The party shall issue automatic tickets to any first-term serving president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all first-term serving governors who have expressed interest to re-contest for a second term without going through party primaries.” The grouse of the legislators is that the proposal only mentioned the governors. “All of us are members of the national convention and will partake in the ratification of the constitution. I don’t see why senators cannot be part of the amendment,” another legislator said. http://www.tribune.com.ng/17022009/news/news1.html |
