Lagos - Nigerian customs officers intercepted a truck loaded with nearly 200 Italian-made rifles on a road in the south-west of the country and arrested three suspects, a spokesperson Friday,

"The anti-smuggling unit of the service intercepted the truck with 190 pieces of brand new Italian-made rifles on the Ijebu Ode-Benin expressway on Wednesday," Wale Adeniyi said.

He said the three occupants of the vehicle had lied that the truck was loaded with motor spare parts.

"The suspects are helping us in our investigation, " he added.

I am really wondering how a government parastatal saddled with a particular responsibility creates a sub-responsibility with the same responsibility. Apart from ensuring that customs collect taxes on behalf of government at the ports, ensure that goods coming into nigeria come in with the right documents and checking smuggling at the borders, what else id their work abeg?
