Vision 2020: FG targets 70-year life expectancy

In just 11 years from now, Nigerians will enjoy a 70-year life expectancy rate and per capita income of not less than $4,000, if the Federal Government realises its Vision 2020 plan.

The vision seeks to place Nigeria among the top 20 global economies by 2020.

According to the 2007/2008 United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report, life expectancy at birth in the country is 46.5 years, while GDP per capita income is $1,128.

President Umaru Yar'Adua on Monday disclosed the "strategic goals" of the vision at the inauguration of the Vision 2020 Business Support Group at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja.

The President, who was represented by Vice-President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, announced the strategic goals in an address presented at the event.

Other targets in the goal include about 300 per cent increase in GDP, availability of adequate infrastructural services; the reduction of infectious diseases to the barest minimum; a modern, technologically driven- agricultural sector; and a globally competitive manufacturing sector.

The vision also foresees that Nigeria will be a peaceful haven by that year.

Yar'Adua expressed the belief that the vision was attainable.

According to the President, "As encapsulated in the NV2020 (Nigeria Vision 2020) framework, our strategic goals include the following; by 2020 the country will be a peaceful, harmonious and a stable democracy.

"By 2020, we would have a sound, stable and globally competitive economy with a GDP of not less than $900bn and per capita income of $4,000.

"Adequate infrastructure services that support the full mobilisation of the economic sector.

"A health sector that supports and sustains a life expectancy of not less than 70 years and reduces to the barest minimum the burden of infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, etc.

"A modern, technology enabled, agricultural sector that fully exploits the vast agricultural sector that fully exploits the vast agricultural resources of the country, assures national food security and contributes significantly to foreign exchange earnings.

"A vibrant and globally competitive manufacturing sector that contributes significantly to GDP, with a manufacturing value added of not less than 40 per cent."

The belief in the possibility of realising the vision is based on the currently strong, and improving fundamentals of the Nigerian economy, according to the President.

Explaining his belief that Nigeria could actually become one of the top 20 economies in the world within just 11 years, Yar'Adua said, "These (strategic goals) are very appropriate when one considers key parameters for ranking global economies."

He said public resources would not be enough to drive the vision and called on the private sector to support.

He hinted that the cost implication of the vision would be shared equally between the government and the private sector.

"The support of the private sector in the funding process is considered critical to the attainment of these goals," he added.

"I am happy to note that the private sector has not only taken up the challenge, but has gone a step further to concretise this arrangement by agreeing to set up the Business Support Group.

He said, "As I look at the eminent Nigerians that have gathered here today despite the short notice, and more importantly in the face of dwindling resources arising from pervading global financial crises and attendant recession, I am proud to say tha we have a responsive private sector."

I did not know Yar'Adua became God o! Is it in this hopeless situation that they wish to change everything upside down in 11 years? I will watch this very carefully. If they can reach half they deserve bonuses. Yar'Adua himself might not stay alive till then with his poor health.

FANTASY; a sudden transformation will bring a total change in one's fortune, by passing work, luck, self sacrifice.

REALITY; change is slow and gradual, it requires hard work, a fair amount of self sacrifice and lots of patience.

Issues like dis leaves one rather too sad to comment on.

Cant we make plans that are measurable by weekly, monthly
and annual achievements?
70 yrs expectancy by what indices, good roads, electricity
water,jobs,health care or how

Increased GDP by producing what except oil?

sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad

By 2020 it will be vision 2030,by 2030 it bcomes vision 2050.
May God help us

i am one of those skeptics who never believe yar'adua will die while in office. the worst case is for the FG to start kidnapping people to extract their kidneys whenever the president has the need for one.

Bollocks! YaraDULL is a FOOL if he actually read that LIE of a SPEECH after the paid speechwriter concorted that CRAP! C'mon, does anyone believe this idiot has a clue what is happening in Nigeria? While Nigeria is being deserted daily by Nigerians, this man who shouldn't even be a primary school class captain is promising heaven on earth by 2020 without giving ONE clue how he will get anything done??

Life expectancy of 70 years, GDP of $ 900 Billion, etc and some equally foolish spare tire read that cock and bull story to grown men or little kids who may really have no clue? This kind of lying by the man who is imposed as a non-president is just disgusting! I honestly cannot see YaraMONU being elected as a councillor in my city, never! Yet, this man who is totally clueless is talking about "vision"? This is so disgusting, lying to everyone and does anyone with half a brain believe this idiocy? Well, with this man's performance since he was rigged into a position that he knows nothing about clearly indicates he is not a brilliant man or his brains took flight a long time ago. Can this man even lead an ordinary study group in a real university? Definitely, not by any standards that progressive organizations choose leaders.

In order countries where people value their integrity more than any money or material wealth, no idiot will read that speech to anyone! Anyone who is present and hears this rubbish will definitely be ready to ask the really tough questions immediately in front of cameras. But not in Nigeria where GIGO is totally applicable to us - Garbage In Garbage Out! So, by 2020 when the productive backbone of the country would have relocated to Ghana, China, Cameroun or even Benin Republic, we will only get another Vision 2030? YaraDULL knows he doesn't know what he is doing or what to do! He is like a confused man running from pillar to post and Nigeria can never be better than the quality of the leadership it gets. This is one of the reasons why that country is still in the doldrums today. Yara should just quit and stop making a fool of himself and the whole country by making really STUPID speeches that have no substance!
