Boko Haram: Punish Nigerian Army Chiefs, UN Tells President Buhari by Monogamy: 6:49pm On Jun 05, 2015
The UN rights chief on Friday denounced rights abuses by both Boko Haram Islamists and the Nigerian military and asked the country’s new president to punish offenders.

“Civilians in northeast Nigeria have been living through horrifying acts of cruelty and violence by Boko Haram. These include wanton killings, summary executions, forced participation in military operations –- including the use of children to detonate bombs, forced labour, forced marriage and sexual violence, including rape,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said.

But there were equally alarming reports of flagrant violations by the Nigerian military in its crackdown against the group, he said, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari “to take urgent measures to bring to justice perpetrators of human rights violations and abuses, whether non-State or State actors.”

The new Nigerian leader, who took office last week, has made the fight against Boko Haram a priority, vowing to rid his country of “the terror” of the Islamist fighters.

Zeid said there were witness accounts of how Boko Haram amputated the hands of children suspected of theft, gathered villagers ostensibly on the pretext of staging a mass sermon and then mowed them down with bullets, and stoned to death a man “on accusations of fornication.”

On the government side, there were reports of people being detained for up to five days without food or water for suspected Boko Haram links.

“We have continued to receive reports of arbitrary arrests and detention, torture and summary executions as well as of a failure to ensure the protection of civilians during counter-insurgency operations,” he said.

Zeid also called for a probe into “deeply disturbing allegations that thousands of people have died or have been killed while being held in detention in state institutions.”

“This is crucial to ensure that the victims of Boko Haram crimes are not doubly victimised by their own government,” he said.

Boko Haram’s insurgency has killed at least 15,000 people since 2009 and has now spilled over to countries neighbouring Nigeria.

.The UN should not kill d morale of our troops a beg.In the fight against insurgency/ terrorism, human right abuses is a common features the world over. The UN should not make it look like its only our men that have committed these offences. Troops of the US and UK committed serious human right abuses in both both Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is time to do a proper reorientation of the Nigerian armed forces and the police. They still behave like a Colonial occupation force that must utilise oppression and rights abuses to tame citizens. This surely is a major defect in their training that must be revisited, if not we would continue to have accidents like the boko haram crisis that is a result of police mishandling of a ragtag religious sect excesses.

God help us.

UN should keep their mouth shout. From what they said they don't have any proof what the Nigerian soldiers did.

The U.N should keep quit.
When George Bush invade Iraq, what did the say? During that time there were reports of human right abuses. The U.S. Army kill children who wear but a rag, while the armies were well dress with bullet proof vest and helmet crawling behind a pile up of sand. They came out to call this children who wear rag and equipped with stone and stick to defend their territory 'cowards'.

I am asking, who is the coward between the two?

In the other countries you mentioned, they put their military men and women on trial and sentence them to jail for war crimes and abuse. Try educate yourself first before making ignorant and misguided emotional statements.

Military abuse and gross human rights violations in your own country is even worse because the same military men in uniform abuse, terrorize and kill innocent innocent Nigerians all the time. We see them beat Nigerians, slap them , kill them and even go on rampage burning and destroying public properties like barbaric animals.

Are the innocent Nigerians they kill, terrorize and brutalize far away from the war front BH or terrorists?

What we have today is not a professional and disciplined military. Strong measures should be taken to clean up the military to serve you and your country better.

Instead of attacking the UN, we should call on the Buhari administration to diligently investigate the allegations raised and prosecute anybody found wanting. There are rules of engagement in any battle. If truly some military officers committed war crimes, they should face the consequences without sentiments.

of cos such allegations should be investigated.

But the problem is the timing, such outcry could bring about a decline in the morale on the part of the millitary.

Info like this should come after victory and not in the midlle of a war.

I know that they put their military personnel for trials in the us and UK. my point is the UN and AI don't make much noise about the abuse carried out by the military personnel in these countries as they do when it come to ours.

Remi Tinubu pant sniffer you are here advocating for justice for Boko lunatics on the basis of human rights abuse when you once stated here that any attempt to restart the militancy in the NE will see Buhari order the same military you are condemning here to level the entire Niger Delta.

To call you a hypocrite is an insult to hypocrites!

You know you have a problem, but you just don't want to hear it from the UN. Makes no sense.

This is not about other people and what they say about you, it's more about you recognizing that you have problems that you need to take care of.

Focusing on other people or pointing fingers at other people is cowardly and needless distraction which won't make your problem go away.

And the the US and UK didn't cry about the UN, they fixed their problems and sent their own men to jail for abuse.
