The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria on
Friday held a meeting in Ibadan where it gave a two-week
ultimatum to Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to
pay five months salaries of resident doctors of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital.

The association’s President, Dr. Dan-Jumbo Prince, told
journalists that the institution had struggled through every stage of its development despite serving the purpose for which it was established.

He accused Ajimobi of deliberately neglecting the institution,
adding that the action had denied the citizens of the state,
medical students of the institution and others of quality service from the teaching hospital. Prince warned that a national strike might be embarked upon if Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Benue and other states that owed doctors refused to pay them.

He said, “Under Ajimobi’s administration, Oyo citizens have
been denied the best of care due to staggering and unstable
environment relatively prevailing all year round within this
institution. One can only imagine what the employees and their families are experiencing this time.

“The hospital is suffering because of the lack of commitment
and fairness on the part of the state government, non existence of a hospital board for a teaching hospital that has a well spelt out edict establishing it.

“The truth must be told that the hospital workers have yet to
receive any salary since the beginning of this year. How does the government expect us to deliver safe, quality and effective health care to the people?”

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Friday suspended its nine-day-old strike after the leadership of the union said it had reached an agreement with the state government over payment of salary arrears.

The union directed its members to stay off work from May 26 because of unpaid salaries and retirees’ pensions.

On Friday, the Chairman of the state chapter of the NLC,
Waheed Olojede, called on the workers to resume work on
Monday, June 8, 2015, saying that after several days of negotiation with the state government, an agreement was
reached that was suitable to both parties.

“After a successful negotiation which led to the signing of a
Memorandum of Understanding with the state government, the labour union has resolved to suspend the strike,” Olojede said, adding that the union had also reached an agreement with the state government on modalities to employ to pay the outstanding March, April and May salaries.

Ajimobi is not committed to LAUTECH TH at all. He is deliberately punishing the staff and students because the TH is Akala's project. I hope he'll wake up to realise how important LAUTECH TH is and stop seeing it as his rival's project.
