Lack of access to bank loans to start a business is always cited as the reason most people don't start a business in the face of chronic unemployment. But if one is truly enterprising there are numerous innovative businesses with huge potentials one can go into with little start up capital provided they were well packaged. Here are 5 selected innovative ideas for the small business entrepreneurs and stay at home mums:

HOME CRECHE
You can run a crèche services from home using your living room and possibly a bedroom as well. You will need to be living in minimum two bedroom flat and minimal investment in play pens and toys with a well presented flexible kid friendly living room you could transform back to your normal living room after the close of business. You could start by taking a couple of kids and charging appropriately. You will need to invest in printing marketing flyers to distribute in your local area announcing your services. Possible start-up capital: N30k - N50k.

HOME FROZEN FOOD SALE
You could sell frozen food from the comfort of your home e.g Turkey, Native and Agric Chicken, Goat meat, Cow meat, Cow tail, shakky, kpomo, ice fish, dry fish etc. You could add complementary goods like eggs. You will need a Freezer and a good Gen Set and a marketing flyer. Possible start-up capital: N40k - 60k.

HOME LAUNDRY
This is NOT a "dry cleaning" business but just a laundry service from your home. You machine wash clothes for the immediate neighbourhood for collection when done and if they want you to deliver after wash, you charge extra. You are not involved in drying or ironing. Just wash and collect. You will need a washing machine, detergent, fabric conditioner and a Gen Set. You will also need a marketing flyer to distribute in your local area announcing your services. Possible start-up capital N60k - N120K.

LONDON FASHION RETAIL
This is simple. You could import wholesale from the UK for retail or "counting" in Nigeria. UK well known brand names are fast moving in Nigeria. Ladies flat shoes, tops, men's smart casual shirts and shoes. This should normally be delivered to your door step two - three weeks after payment. You will need a trusted and tested UK source. You may contact me if you struggle to find a trusted and reliable UK source. Possibly start - up capital N70k - N120k.

OIL AND GAS HOME DELIVERY
Have you ever being or seen a scenario where a family runs out of cooking gas or Kerosene or fuel for generator but the "head" or bread-winner of the household is away with the only family car? This is a growing problem in Nigeria and a gap you need to fill. You can set up a home Oil and Gas delivery service in jerry cans and gas cylinders. Customers could text/call you for supply when they run out of supply. You don't inflate the price of fuel bought, you only charge for delivery. So if you bought fuel for N95, that's what you deliver but charge say N200 per 20liter jerry can or 50kg gas cylinder. Do the Maths; if you make an average of N400 per family and deliver to 20 family a day that's N8,000 a day. You will need an articulated Keke for delivery, a mobile phone(s) and liaise or sort a filling station for quick purchase. Possible start-up: N350,000 if you are buying a new Keke or considerably less if you are renting a Keke for daily delivery to the owner. You will also need a delivery driver.

Thanks a lot for this post. You may not this but I want to tell you that you have just provided employment for some people through this post. A lot of people believe you can't start a business until you have minimum of N1m. In most cases, availability of cash when one is just starting is the undoing of many people. Many have money but lack skills and experience. When the invest the money, in a short while, the money is mismanaged and wasted. By this, some lost confidence in starting again. The truth is that, small is beautiful! Visit www.businessinfohub.com for articles that can enhance your skills.

That oil and gas home supply sure looks more promising but very tasking...it will require some thorough logistics.

Most times it's not the capital to start but the idea and final packaging. You may have the whole money in the world but if your business is not well packaged, you've already set up yourself for failure. Also, it takes time and effort to break-even. We should think less on instant profit and large start up capital. Look at your immediate environment, there must be a problem families are experiencing, turn this into a business by providing solution and charge reasonably for it.

Actually, they all very lucrative. You may not need a killer logistic outlay, just keep it simple, know your local area, don't over stretch yourself initially and package it tight.

For the Oil and Gas; rent a Keke for daily delivery say N1,500 (depending) and if possible pay for two weeks to the owner upfront, print the marketing flyers for about N5,000 and distribute them in your area door to door, banks, church/mosque, school gates, local shops etc, buy some spare jerry cans for exchange, have ready references of customers that you have delivered to during test run and then wait for the calls to come in.

Let take the Home Creche, say you charge N5,000 a month per child on average and you have 10 kids, that's N100K a month from an investment of under N50K. Mind you this is not free money. The kids safety is a top priority. Also you can charge pay as you go that is families or mum that just want to run to the market or keep appointment, they could drop their kids on hourly basis. You charge more for this service. No venture, no success.

Thanks for pointing this out but actually I've factored in Pay As You Go kids as well. I should have made this clearer.
