I was going to gloss over the report until I came to the part below: “They left it to President Buhari to come up with the specifics on his requirements, assuring that they would study the requirements either individually or collectively and offer help. They asked to know the nature and the scale of the problems in order to know the nature and the scale of the assistance they will provide. Suffice it to say that they assured President Buhari that ‘Nigeria will find a partner in the G7.'” Now my impression was that President Buhari attended the G7 summit already armed with his "wish list" for which we would require the assistance of the West, specifically with respect to fighting Boko Haram (now I have my issues with the term "wish list", but that's a story for another day). I'm therefore shocked at this report, which seems to suggest that the president didn't go to the meeting prepared to state EXACTLY what kind of assistance we need from the West, and when. How come Buhari is being asked to RETURN with "specifics"? Didn't he know (or couldn't he explain) what we want in the first place? More worryingly, can anyone tell us ONE thing that we were able to achieve from attending this summit (besides the photo ops)? My conclusion (unless further facts emerge) is that the president failed to prepare adequately for this summit and ended up wasting precious time and resources. Indeed if we go by this report, Buhari may end up making further trips to individual Western countries (at public expense) to present "details of his wish list". Ridiculous. We may, as the PDP supporters claim, have entered "one chance". |
