Whispers of a Polity (volume II)
In his historical novel ''Tale of Two Cities'' ,
Charles Dickens was depicting the pre
revolutionary France, he has no inkling he
was painting a 21st century Nigeria.
He narrated thus : ''a pot of wine cracked
open in the middle of the road. And
everyone from far and wide through out the
cities came forth to have a share of the
wine. They sing and dance and revel. They
forgot their mysteries upon the wine. But
soon the pot was empty, and the people
were sobber again. And to their home they
all went. The farmer to his farm, the potter
to his pots. The people were back to their
mystery'' .
Since 1999, every four years in Nigeria, a pot
of wine will be cracked open, and from the
well-to-do cities to the poorest creeks, from
the highways to the narrow paths,
Nigerians will revel upon the wine.
The pot so cracked is the bank account of
the politicians, while the wine that flows
therein is more often the stolen wealths.
And when the cracked pot is bereaved of
wine, the people go back to their mystery,
waiting for another four years, and as well
as to do what they can do best ; praying.
In the front of a fast moving Train, Nigerians
will prefer to pray than run. You dont
agree ? Okay.
Is it not the same with going to Church or
Mosque to ask God for ''good leaders'' ,
instead of to go straight to the office of
their Councellors, Local Government
Chairmen, House Members, Governors and
even President to ask how they are driving
or intending to drive their collective
destiny ?
As in Tale of Two Cities, the people of France
remain poor and downthroding by their
leaders, until the people have a rethink to
STAND WATCH of their collective destiny.
Our future and that of our unborn children
depend on our responsibility to STAND
WATCH and make sure that our pot of wine
is cracked open everyday, and not every four
years.
Be part of the generation that will leave
behind a prosperous and united Nigeria.
A new Nigeria is possible...it begins with
you!
