RESIST BAD HABITS TODAY!!!
A wealthy man requested an old scholar to
wean his son away from his bad habits.
The scholar took the youth for a stroll
through a garden. Stopping suddenly, he
asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing
there. The youth held the plant between his
thumb and forefinger, and effortlessly pulled
it out.
The old man then asked him to pull out a
slightly bigger plant. The youth pulled hard
and the plant came out, roots and all.
“Now pull out that one,” said the old man,
pointing to a bush. The boy had to use all
his strength to pull it out.
“Now take this very one out,” said the old
man, indicating a guava tree. The youth
grasped the trunk and tried to pull it out; but
it would not budge.
” I — it’s impossible!” said the boy, panting
with the effort.
“So it is with bad habits,” said the sage.
“When they are young, it is easy to pull them
out; but when they take hold, they cannot be
uprooted.”
Friends, this story filters everyday to us; and
same points out how bad habits hanker to
domicile perpetually in man.
Virtually, everything you do is the result of
your habits. You are a bundle of habits. The
way you walk, talk, act and deal with
important people in your life is largely
habitual. You are, in a nutshell, a creature of
habits; and life itself is habit.
In furtherance of the old scholar’s position,
changing habits that are no longer in tandem
or consistent with your objectives will be one
of the most challenging steps you will ever
take. Good habits are hard to form, but easy
to live with; and bad habits are easy to form,
but hard to live with. The toughest things to
change are bad habits that run counter to the
goals that you want to achieve. Some of
these bad habits are, inter alia: Telling lies,
smoking, masturbation, homo$exuality,
lesbianism, et cetera.
If a habit is not helpful, then, it is
incontrovertibly harmful; if not to your health,
then, to your future. If a habit is not leading
you toward success, it is leading you to
failure. Habits are not instinctive; they are
acquired reactions. They do not just happen;
they are rather caused. Once you determine
the original cause of a habit, it is within your
God-given power to either accept or reject it.
Some of you have been wallowing in some
bad habits, not knowing they are really bad.
Good instances of these habits are, inter alia:
1. The geometrical growing of an urge to
engage yourself in examination malpractice
or malfeasance. Indeed, this academic devilry
or canker is eating deep in Nigeria’s
education sector. It has become so
conventional that self-confidence has lost its
grip on our academic endeavor or pursuit.
2. Not managing your time and making
excuses are another two bad habits to be
noted in your life. You don’t have to put
them both together by claiming you “dont
have the time.”
If you stop bad habits, and you stop long
enough, you will definitely develop good
habits. And before you overcome your bad
habits, you will have demonstrated great
willpower and self-confidence. It actually
takes approximately three to four weeks to
break a habit. It takes the same amount of
time to develop a new one. After this brief
period, the habit becomes rooted. In other
words it becomes an automatic response in
your behaviour.
Remember, we first form habits; then, habits
form us. In individual drive toward
achievement, if we do not consciously form
good habits, we will unconsciously form bad
ones. Successful men and women have
simply formed the habit of doing things that
failures will not do. It is just as easy to form
the habit of succeeding as it is to succumb to
the habit of failure. Perhaps, now is the
appropriate time to ask; “What bad habits
would I like to change or alter?”
NB: You can kindly share this write-up with
your beloved friends.
