Ikpeazu Slashes Salary, Travel Allowances By Half:

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the slashing of his salary and travel allowance by 50%, in view of the current economic woes in the state.

Speaking with newsmen after swearing in the state’s new Head of Service, Dr. Vivian Uma, Governor Ikpeazu said he was hurt by his administration’s inability to pay salaries of workers as at when due following the dwindling federal allocation.

The governor called on political appointees to follow his example, stressing that there is need to cut down the cost of governance to lessen the economic woes of the state.

Governor Ikpeazu, who is yet to move into the Government House, Umuahia, also promised “to do everything possible” to steadily pay the arrears of workers’ salaries.

He promised not to lift the self-imposed strictness until the salaries and allowances owed workers were cleared.

In Abia State, some workers have continued to express disgust over the unpaid wages and have appealed to the state government to clear all the outstanding debts.

These workers (especially those in the parastatals), and pensioners are being owed up to six months salaries.

This development comes just 48 hours after Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano state governor also directed the reducing of wages and allowances of political office holders by 50%.:
