Some teens are about to make sexual encounters much safer (and possibly a little more awkward) all thanks to a condom that changes color when it comes into contact with a sexually transmitted disease. The brainchildren of the “S. T. EYE” contraceptive innovation in sexual health consist of three kids from Isaac Newton Academy in Ilford, Essex: Daanyaal Ali, 14, Muaz Nawaz, 13, and Chirag Shah, 14. They began their mission with trying to develop a safer, better way of detecting STDs.

The condom has a built-in indicator that can detect such STDs as chlamydia and syphilis. The color of the condom will then change, depending on the strain of the infection. This kind of product eliminates some of those more awkward calls and subsequent visits to the doctor to get tested. Indeed, the product does add a certain peace of mind for those of us who want to let loose a little before settling down. It allows people to “take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors,” Daanyaal said in an interview.

This innovation is all thanks to the TeenTech awards — a programmed aimed to encourage young inventors and would-be disruptors of the industry. I’d say this group succeeded in making casual encounters just a little safer for the next generation. Let’s hope manufacturers take note.

For their contribution, the group will receive £1,000 (about $1,570) and a trip to Buckingham Palace.
