A major firm aanouncing falling dividends or a major investor expressing pessimism on the economy is naturally expected to have a negative effect.

If major policy announcements by Obama and Geithner, designed to lift the economy, has the same effect as the above, that speaks volumes of the quality of the policies in question.

Quite honestly, I don't see government recovering all the money it sank into them so far and better to take them over now than later.  But then, the politics of it is scary. . .  if Wall street is good in the hands of Dems, it's equally good in hands of Reps.  Dems are discomforted in that possibility down the line.

You may be right but AIG doesn't offer a good example of a Govt takeover anyway. Nevertheless, nationalisation still looks like the only viable solution though for the likes of Citicorp. Citicorp is practically insolvent. If you have money to short them, you should.

Geithner is not the only guy to open his mouth and make indices fall.

Almost ALL measures announced by Governments and Central Banks have underwhelmed market expectations.

The answer is simple - conduct the stress test and PUMP more money into the system.

I am in favour of bailout and will always be in favour of bailout!

NLers complain about bailout of AIG etc.

I say, if Govt lets AIG fall, the whole world falls into INSTANT GREAT DEPRESSION! I am talking the kind of great depression where you wear newspapers on your feet, tie it with rope and call it sandals. 

AIG insures Government bonds for China, India, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong etc etc etc.

Let AIG go and all these countries currencies collapse instantly, rioting, government overthrow and all that.

the new deal did not end the depression. agreed. but unemployment went down from about 25% when FDR entered to about I4% when the US joined the 2nd world war.

I can see your lowest standard for   a gentleman- a drug addict who was even sanctioned by the law, had to go to a rehab. You should also tell us, that a hedge fund manager who makes millions or billions of dollars annually pays less tax than a secretary working for him/her. A hedge fund manager pays about 10-15% while his secretary pays 20-30% and if they both live in the same neighborhood, same type of  house with the same sqf, shop in the same grocery store, mall, market, they are taxed evenly.  I rather believe Warren Buffet than a political entertainer.
