Greeks overwhelmingly rejected conditions of a rescue package from creditors on Sunday, throwing the future of the country's euro zone membership into further doubt and deepening a standoff with lenders.
As the euro slid more than 1 percent against the dollar and European stock and bond markets were poised to take a sharp hit with the resumption of trade on Monday, stunned European leaders called a summit for Tuesday to discuss their next move.
Thousands of jubilant Greeks waving flags and bursting fire crackers poured into Athens' central square as official figures showed 61 percent of Greeks had rejected a deal that would have imposed more austerity measures on an already ravaged economy.
"You made a very brave choice," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a televised address. "The mandate you gave me is not the mandate of a rupture with Europe, but a mandate to strengthen our negotiating position to seek a viable solution."
The surprisingly strong victory by the 'No' camp defied opinion polls that had predicted a tight contest after a week of rising desperation as banks shut and cash machines ran dry.
The vote leaves Greece in uncharted waters: risking a banking collapse that could force it out of the euro. Without more emergency funding from the European Central Bank, Greece's banks could run out of cash within days. That might force the government to issue another currency to pay pensions and wages.
For millions of Greeks the outcome was an angry message to creditors that Greece can no longer accept repeated rounds of austerity that, in five years, had left one in four without a job and that shrank the economy by a quarter. Tsipras has denounced the price paid for aid as "blackmail", a national "humiliation".
"The message from the 'No' is that we're not scared after all the pressure that we faced from both Europe and within," said Stathis Efthimiadis, 47-year-old teacher.
"We want to live fairly and freely within Europe."
Officials from the Greek government, which had argued that a 'No' vote would strengthen its hand to secure a better deal from international creditors after months of wrangling, immediately said they would try to restart talks with European partners.
But euro zone officials shot down any prospect of a quick resumption of talks, even though finance ministers were planning to meet during the week to discuss the fallout from the vote. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will meet in Paris on Monday afternoon.
"Tsipras and his government are leading the Greek people on a path of bitter abandonment and hopelessness," Germany's economy minister Sigmar Gabriel told the Tagesspiegel daily. He said negotiations with Athens now were "barely conceivable".
Many of Athens' partners have warned over the past week that a 'No' vote would mean cutting bridges with Europe and driving Greece's crippled financial system into outright bankruptcy.
The result delivers a hammer blow to the European Union's grand single currency project. Intended to be permanent and unbreakable when it was created 15 years ago, the euro zone could now be on the point of losing its first member with the risk of further unravelling to come.
"I believe such a result can be used as a strong negotiating tool so that Europeans can understand that we are not a colony," said Nefeli Dimou, a 23-year-old student in Athens.

I remember days back listening to the Greeks on TV saying there's no Europe without Greece. I just said to myself 'these guys are just as deluded as my Nigerian compatriots calling Nigeria giant of Africa'.

Rexphobia:
Long read, but it's worth it.

Greece really likes taking care of his family. Some of his cousins and his older relatives struggle to find work, others don't like to work, and plenty see themselves as "too old" to work. So Greece helps out by sending them some money [Pensions and Unemployment].

Greece's job doesn't cover all the money he spends on his family, So Greece got a credit card a long-time ago [National Debt].

Greece told himself that he could manage his credit card balances. His friends' credit cards have much higher balances, and they can make their payments without any troubles. But Greece ignores the obvious: his friends make a lot more money than he does, and their credit card companies think that they'll continue to make more money. So they get better interest rates [High Debt-to-GDP, High Interest Rates].

But--for a long time--things seemed alright. When Greece's credit card got too high he used a little accounting trick to say that he had more money than he did and he could make those high credit card payments. As long as he didn't do this everyday his credit card companies didn't mind too much [Printing Money to Fund Deficits].

Then Greece saw his friends set up a cool club. Their club made it easy it do business with each other and that made his friends and their families happy. Greece believed joining that club would make him feel important, but when his friends joined they gave up some of their autonomy. If they got into trouble with their credit cards they couldn't do those accounting tricks that Greece did [Eurozone and the Euro and Ceding Monetary Control to the ECB].

Still, Greece really wanted in. Deep down he knew that he had a problem and he needed to deal with it. Maybe he felt like an alcoholic. "If I join this club," he thought, "I can change my life for the better. I'll stop being so irresponsible with my money." To get into the club, Greece needed to show the other members that he wouldn't wreck their party if he joined. He made the case that they could trust him. He said: "here's all my financial information." He probably lied :/ Fact and Fiction in EU-Governmental Economic Data [Eurozone Reports].

The club let Greece in. He thought: "I've made it! I'm one of the best!" He needed to tighten his belt. He knew that. But his family still counted on him to pay their rent. The club didn't allow Greece to spend so much money above his income, but Greece did it anyway. He felt an obligation to support his family. Maybe--like an alcoholic--Greece thought: "Tomorrow I'll change." Always tomorrow. But Greece didn't change fast enough [Greece Continues to Rack Up Debt].

It didn't bother his club or his credit card companies too much at the time. When Greece got in trouble he just took out another credit card, and he used those new cards to charge the payments for his old cards [Issuing Debt to Make Debt Payments].

Greece lost his job. He found another, but it only paid about 75% of what his old job paid him. And that job didn't always pay him what he deserved [Economic Downturn and Tax Fraud].

Credit card companies got scared. The credit card companies' friends lent to other clients and got burned when some of those clients couldn't make their payments. They knew Greece struggled to get by, so they decided not to loan to him any more. Greece couldn't get another credit card to pay his old cards. How would he support his family? And how would he get a better job if he didn't have money to invest in himself?[2007-2010 Credit Crisis and Greece Gets Cut Off].

Greece's club, with another bigger club, stepped into help. They didn't want to see Greece fail; if he did it might hurt all of them. Greece owed some members of this club, and their families, a lot of money. So they lent Greece the cash he needed to stay afloat. But that didn't make a big, important member happy. The clubs, and this big member, made demands. The big ones? Greece needed to ensure he got paid what he was due, and Greece could no longer support all his family members [ECB and IMF Step In, Germany Doesn't Like It, Conditions on Loans].

Greece takes the money and now he can make his payments for another five years. But he doesn't cut his family off like the clubs told him to, and he can't stand up to his boss to get his rightful paycheck. Admittedly, Greece's family threatens to beat him up if he cuts them off. But still [Greece Doesn't Meet Terms of Loans].

Greece's club worries about him. They make sure that if he can't pay they won't hurt. They buy insurance in case Greece can't pay, and they sell off Greek debt to cousins with a taste for risk [European Banks Hedge Risk of Greek Default].

Payment time. The big club that helped Greece needs a payment. But Greece can't/won't make it. Greece can't bring himself to cut-off his family or ask his boss to stop cheating him. So he lets his family decide if he will obey the demands the club puts on Greece [Default on IMF and Announcement of Referendum on Austerity].

This is probably the best time for some of you guys to stock up on dollars. I can see the Euro and European bonds taking a battering this week thus increasing american bonds for the short term. I can only see one certainty today. Euro will get closer to Parity vs US dollar fast.No matter what's the outcome EU/ECB decisions on Greece

That's good, because the conditions given by the Greek creditors (Angela Merkel and co) are like remedy that is worse than the disease.

Will Greece dump euro and goes back to its former currency?

If central bank was able to assist the banking industry with trillions and do so almost debt-free, why can't they do the same for the common people?

I'm glad they said "no" to the heartless austerity measures proposed by the IMF and ECB. These loan institutions act like vultures, feeding on the dead. Why is so hard for them to give loan with no stringent policies attached? But they'd pressure countries to open to foreign take over of state enterprises, monopoly by big international firms (mostly from P5).

I reckon with these referendum, the Greeks ccould seek loan outside the EU. The BRICS could come of help at this moment. Imagine how Merkel would fume with rage if the Chinese grants the Greeks loan with no austere strings.

Indeed. Leaving the Euro and ending Austerity programs is the only hope for not only Greece, but Spain and Italy. The Italians politicians will follow the Greeks success. They are already talking about it. Ending Austerity to pay back the Banks for Problems caused by the Banks is the fair Thing. Sending the politicians, Bankers and Goldman Sacks (pun) advisors who hid the Problem is the right Thing to do.

Let Greece take the money and invest in viable projects. As Europeans, it is her money that is being reloaned to her to join in developing Europe of which she is a part. Her fellow Europeans are just asking her to be more responsible. Greece should take her legacy and invest in monastries and synagogues for Greek Mythologies and Orientation They should employ strong and experienced Curators and financial experts to commercialise these developments. Is it not Greece, people will come from China, Russia, US, the Americas etc to visit the developing Greek reinvented histories and pay generously.
