The Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Sunday, July 5, dismissed the claims of his predecessor, Alhaji Ramalan Yero, that he left N8 billion in cash for him.

A former deputy governor to Yero, Ambassador Nuhu Bajoga, who was at a function the previous week, said his boss actually left N8 billion in the state’s coffers.

He also decried the cancelling of the proposed Kaduna State University of Science and Technology in Kafanchan by the present governor.

He said: “The Kaduna State Government had N228,333,371.67 in its central account on May 29, 2015, representing the working capital that could be spent.

“All other items in the bank balance are committed funds, and are not available to be spent by government. These include counterpart and reserve funds clearly earmarked for specific purposes such as Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, Subsidy Re-investment Empowerment  Programme SURE-P and State Pensions, and as such cannot be termed available funds by any responsible government.”

In a recent assessment of the performance of new governors by Naij.com, El-Rufai has trudged on without much complaint and has instead made major moves aimed at reducing the cost of government, despite the disastrous condition in which his predecessor left the state.
