“COMMUNIQUE DEVELOPED AT THE 2ND ANNUAL SEMINAR OF ENVILLE INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT HELD AT THE LAGOS AIRPORT HOTEL, LAGOS, OCTOBER 9, 2014

At the 2nd Annual Seminar of Enville Institute of Environmental and Safety Management held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Lagos, October 9, 2014, there were one hundred and thirty participants (130) drawn from various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including academia, corporate organizations, MDA’s, just to mention a few.

There were presentations, discussions and interactive sessions around the theme of the Seminar “Alternative Energy Potentials and Carbon Footprint in Nigeria”

At the end of the sessions, the following were endorsed as Communique and outcome of the Seminar for wide dissemination within the Nigerian polity and general public:

There are lots of challenges in the Nigerian energy sector, including but not limited to population explosion, general poor access to energy/electricity by the majority of Nigerians which encourages dependence on unsustainable and destructive fossil fuels. There are also challenges with technological applications and information gap by the populace.
There are various potentials for exploration of more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative energy solutions in Nigeria.
The Challenges are not insurmountable but require an all-inclusive and holistic approach.

An integrated approach must be employed to the challenges highlighted. This will include the deployment of appropriate technologies for various alternative energy sources, appropriate policy formulations and implementation/enforcement, massive public awareness and education on the challenges to drive a reorientation and attitudinal change that will drive a reduction in carbon footprints/offsetting footprints, through tree planting initiatives, use of public/pool vehicles, etc. Organizations will also need to incorporate clean CSR that will provide off-grid access to their stakeholder communities. There is also a need to have a more effective usage of the available energy through the use of energy efficient devices, automated light switches, etc.

EIESM should enter into collaborations with relevant agencies/organizations such as African Clean Energy Summit (ACES), LAWMA, and EMEL Advanced Power Solutions etc., to set up pilot projects on alternative energy deployments and establish training programmes to build capacity in various sectors.

RAPPORTEURS:

Mrs. Funmi Tsewinor
Mr. Matthew Adekunbi
Mr. Samuel Oboh"

The Chairman’s Closing Remark was made at about 3. 45pm and summarized the important points which the presented papers addressed on the issue of Alternative Energy Potentials and Carbon Footprint in Nigeria. The Closing Prayer was offered by the former Controller, Federal Ministry of Environment, Lagos, Mrs. Olori Babade after which the participants went for lunch. While the lunch was going on, they interacted and exchanged contacts.

The 2nd Annual Seminar of the Enville Institute of Environmental and Safety Management was indeed, one of its kind; a red-letter day in the annals of the Institute.
