Most people take it for granted that Nairaland and Linda Ikeji are the top websites in Nigeria. But if you put stock in Alexa rankings, you might have noticed that those rankings have been moving around over the last few months, and rearranged the pecking order of websites. According to Alexa, the top Nigerian websites are not Nairaland or Linda Ikeji. They are now ecommerce websites.

That’s right. Konga, Jumia, and DealDey might have more traffic coming to them than Nigeria’s biggest content websites. The “might” is a big one, because as I subtly alluded to earlier, Alexa rankings are criticised as an iffy ranking method for many reasons, including its apparent inability to factor in mobile traffic — its tracking toolbars work only in PC browsers.

Regardless, digital agencies and others who like quick, public and ostensibly authoritative metrics swear by Alexa anyway. If you are one of them, the following would be the top ten most trafficked Nigerian websites. Whatever you believe however, it has become clear that Nigerians over the course of the past three years are not just consuming content on the internet, but are increasingly going online to buy stuff.
We’ve been watching said ecommerce websites at the top for a while now, and it seems they keep trading places every few days.
