Mama 2015, Predicting The Winners by fashmania(m): 9:08am On Jul 08, 2015
The MTV Africa Music Awards which
began in 2008 by MTV Networks
Africa now “Viacom International
Media Networks Africa” is one of
the major music awarding ceremonies
held annually in Africa. It involves
the participation of some of the
most well-known artistes and
celebrities in Africa.
Without disputing fact, MTV Africa
Music Award is one of the most
respected and competitive award in
the world of entertainment today
and it has spread its tentacles all
over the countries including Africa.
The nominees of this year’s awards
were unveiled at Haren,
Johannesburg, South Africa at a
press briefing which was attended by
some of the nominees including Seyi
Shay, Black Motion, Bucie, Casper
Nyovest and Diamond Platnumz and a
host of other, celebrities and media.
Fact findings revealed that a total
of 70 artistes were nominated,
across 13 different categories.
Nominees for additional categories,
including the MTV Base Leadership
Award and Best International Act
were not exempted.
MAMA 2015 full Nominees list cut
across, Best male, Best Female, Best
group, Best Hip Hip, Best
collaboration, Song of the year,
Best Live, Video of the year, Best
Pop and Alternative, Best
Francophone, Best Lusophone and
Personality of the year.
As the award ceremony draws
nearer, I have taken time to study
the nominations, follow the
nominated artistes closely and have
been able to come up with unbiased
predictions of possible winners this
year.
Check them out…

Best Male
This category has the biggest male
artistes from the continent battling
it out to clutch the award. This
category is one of the toughest
considering the artistes nominated.
Nominated in this category are
Diamond, AKA, Davido, Wizkid and
Sakodie. From my personal fact
findings, MAMA 2015 Best male award
will likely go to Diamond from
Tanzania because he has had an
incredible 2014/2015, which attracted
world recognition.

The Best Female
This category has great singers like
Bucie, Bussiwa, Seyi Shay, Vanessa,
Mdee, Yemi Alade. From all
indications, MAMA 2015 female
category will likely go to Yemi
Alade because she clearly had a
good year, with countless
appearances across various stages
around Africa and outside the
continent. He video for “Johnny” is
the most viewed female music video
in Nigeria and no other female song
comes close to hers in Africa.

Best Group
This category has P-Square, Sauti
Sol, Beatenberg, Black Motion and B4
as nominees. I will tip PSquare to
take the award in this category,
considering the fact that they still
remain the biggest group in Africa
and their new album, ‘Double
Trouble’ presently boasts of about
6 videos and 4 of these videos
enjoyed the No 1 spot on MTV
Africa top 10 count down and
various other music charts.

Best Hip Hop
This is another keenly contested
category with the likes of Olamide,
Phyno, Youssoupha, K.O and Casper
Nyovest from South Africa. Olamide
or Phyno no doubt, appeal to
Nigerians, but they may end up
sharing votes, which is why Casper
Nyovest may get this award. His
current performance and stage
command may pay off on this one.

Best Collaboration
Slugging it out in this category are
AKA feat, Burna Boy, Da Les & JR
“All Eyes on Me”, Davido featuring
Uhuru and DJ Bukz “The Sound”,
Diamond and Iyanya – “Bum Bum”,
Toofan and DJ Arafat – “Apero
Remix”, Stanley Enow and Sakodie –
“Njama Njama Cow Remix”. Honestly,
this is a very tricky category, but
I will give it to All Eyes on ME,
by AKA featuring Burna Boy, Da Les
and JR. The reason is not
farfetched – the synergy between
the artistes was on point, a feat
that is somewhat difficult to
achieve when you have more than
two people on a song. I may be
wrong, but if I will hand this
plaque, I would give it to “All Eyes
On Me”, but if there’s room for a
second place, then I would also
mention Davido and Uhuru – “The
Sound”

Song of the Year
This is another highly competitive
category, as it features some of
the biggest songs from the
continent with nominations for
“Dorobucci” by the Mavins, “Shoki” by
Lil Kesh feat. Olamide and Davido
and others. Well, I will give it to
“Dorobucci” by Mavins. I feel that
it’s the biggest African tune of the
2014/2015. The song rocked all the
nooks and cranny of Africa, even
several months after its release.

Best Live
Best live category nominees – Big
Nuz, Diamond, Flavour, MI Casa,
Toofan (Togo). I will gice this one
to Flavour. His kind of music is
mostly produced with live
instruments, hence, it is easy for
him to perform live and make it as
believable as the recorded version.
Flavour is also an instrumentalist
and a music scholar, I will be
surprised if he doesn’t win this
category.

Video of the Year
This category comprises of hot
videos such as “Crazy”, “Doors”,
“Love You Every day”, “Nafukwa” and
“The Sound” by Davido featuring
Uhuru and DJ Bukz. I will give this
one to “The Sound”, directed by
Sesan. Apart from South Africa, no
country makes good videos like
Nigerian directors do. All the videos
in this category are great, but the
sky dive, sahara, costume and dance
moves should give this award to
Davido and Sesan.

Best Pop and Alternative
This category entails artistes like
Fuse ODG , Jeremy Loops, Jimmy
Nevis, Nneka, Prime circle. I will give
rather give it to Nneka because of
her buoyancy and the strong theme
of her music.

Best Francophone
This category has artistes like DJ
Arafat, Jovi Laurette Lepeade, Tour
2 Garden, and Toofan. I will give it
to DJ Arafat because he’s been able
to gain relevance in Anglophone
countries where music listeners do
not really understand what he’s
singing. His move to collaborate
with some English speaking artistes
has also helped with his diversity
and continent wide recognition.

Best Lucophone
This category has Ary, B4, Nelson
Frectas, NGA and Yuri Da cunha. I
will rather choose B4 of Angola.
This is because B4’s performances
has given him nominations in other
categories, which cannot really be
said about his contenders.

Personality of the year category
Here we have Basketmouth, Bonang
Matheba, OC Ukeje, Trevor Noah, and
Yaya Toure. I will give it to
Basketmouth because of his hilarious
and mind-blowing performances in
both national and international
comedy shows. He’s not just a big
name, he’s a force to reckon with. I
don’t even see anyone beating him in
this category.

Best New Act : Transformed
Today by Absolut
This category gave nods to nominees
from around the continent, including
Cassper Nyovest (South Africa), Anna
Joyce (Angola), Duncan (South
Africa), Patoranking (Nigeria) and
Stonebwoy (Ghana). Now, this
category is very tight. All the
contenders are strong, but the
stronger artistes for me, would be
Patoranking and Stonebwoy.
Patoranking has been cutting across
several boundaries with her music
and has been very busy performing
on the biggest stages in Nigeria and
outside Africa. Stonebwoy on the
other hand needs no introduction. He
won the last BET Best African Act
award, a honour that skyrockets his
chances ten notches away from his
contenders in this category. Matter
of fact, I think Stonebwoy deserves
this award.

MAMA 2015, will hold on
July 18, 2015 in Durban,
South Africa and will be
hosted by American
artiste, songwriter and
producer – Ne-Yo.
