Not really. Cannabis was demonized and criminalized by western capitalists who saw it as a free alternative to many products.

On getting to what is today Virginia in America ( the state of Virginia was so named by the British explorers as that was were they first landed), the British expedition wasted no time looking for gold. The Virginia Tobacco and the British America Tobacco companies then decided to get servitude workers from the British Isles to work on their plantations in the new land.

Getting workers was no problem as most British and European peasant farmers saw this as an opportunity to escape the grinding poverty in England. They quickly signed up in what they thought was an adventure only to end up in brutal enslavement.

A servitude worker will have to sign 7yrs of indentured labour to the Tobacco company working in plantations meeting a stipulated quota of Tobacco production in return for the company transporting them to the new world.

Because of this brutal arrangement coupled with Malaria epidemic, over 80% of servitude European workers died in the first year on arriving on the continent. Escaping from the slave like plantations further inland was also dreaded as the natives did not hesitate to kill any gringo they encountered. This situation continued for close to a decade until one day a Dutch Ship pulled int harbour with a shipment of "Niggers" for sale.

This is how slavery entered into America; to meet the tobacco supply of wealthy Europeans.

Tobacco is truly a cancer to the world.
