Couples are generally advised to seek medical attention if they are unable to achieve pregnancy after a year of unprotected intercourse. The doctors will conduct a physical examination of both individuals to determine their general state of health and to evaluate physical disorders that may be causing infertility. Usually both individuals are interviewed about their sexual habits in order to determine whether intercourse is taking place properly for conception.

If no cause can be determined at this point, more specific tests may be recommended.

A sperm test sperm test (semen analysis) of the male partner.
•A blood test to check that ovulation occurs in the female partner. This measures the hormone progesterone which is high just after ovulation. The blood sample is taken on the 21st day of a regular 28-day cycle (counting day one as the first day of bleeding).
•They may also suggest some other tests, depending on any other symptoms that you may have. For example, whether the female partner has regular periods or not, etc.
