According to the President of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists. William Power, the results of a ‘bionic eye’ trial offer hope to patients with a rare eye disease. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis system consists of a small electronic device implanted in and around the eye, plus a tiny video camera attached to a pair of glasses, and a video processing unit that is worn or carried by the patient who suffers from this rare eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa.

An incurable eye disease that causes slow vision loss which eventually leads to blindness. It leads to a breakdown of cells in the retina, the light sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. For the study, a clinical trial of 30 people, aged 28 to 77, was conducted in the United States and Europe. The visual function results showed that up to 89% of the patients on which the device was tested performed significantly well. Thanks, once again to Science.
