Yes, Babangida was injured during the war, his "absense" was not the reason Buhari became his senior. Right in this room, where Col. Babangida was having a handshake with Murtala Muhammed after being sworn in as a member of the Supreme Military Council in July 1975, Lt-Col. Buhari was sworn in as the Governor of North Western State and a member of the National Council of State. It is clear here that Babangida, just as the Civil War years, was a rank ahead of Buhari. When Buhari became his senior should be between 1975 to 1983. In 1983 when the troika of Buhari, Idiagbon and Babangida became the GOC, Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters and Chief of Army Staff, respectively, Buhari was a Maj-General while the rest were Brig-General. Mind you, Buhari never promoted himself.

No sir, you are wrong. Muhammadu Buhari has always been a rank ahead of Ibrahim Babangida, though Buhari was his senior by few months. Buhari enlisted in the Army on April 1962, same day with General Musa Yar'Adua. Babangida enlisted in the Army on December 10 1962, same day with Abacha, Gado Nasko, Vatsa, etc. So, Buhari and Babangida both enlisted in 1962, but Buhari in April, Babangida in December.

@OP, where did you get this pix from. This pix is not that of Buhari as HOS but of late Gen Murtala Mohammed. Buhari has never had chubby cheeks but Murtala had.
Also when Buhari was HOS, IBB was already a general.
Moreover, in 1984 when Buhari became HOS black and white pics were no longer in vogue even in the villages.

Did you check very well before posting? There was no mention of Buhari at all. This pic refers to the swearing in of the SMC in 1975. Where was Buhari mentioned in the thread, please show me

It is one thing to be enlisted, it is another thing to be commissioned and the first rank you get as a commissioned officer, Lieutenant or 2nd Lieutenant. Could you then explain how Babangida became Buhari's senior before 1983?

Not at all, as the junior, he must stand straight when shaking his superior's hand. It's only to civilians that standing erect is considered disrespectful. IBB dared not bend before his superior, standing erect is like standing at attention

Yes, it is one thing to be enlisted, it is another to be commissioned. Babangida was never Buhari's senior in 1983. In 1983 when they overthrew Shagari, both of them were major generals, though Buhari was his senior by number (Buhari was promoted to major general before IBB and Vatsa were later promoted the same day). At the time, apart from Lt Gen Wushishi who was Shagari's army chief, the most senior army officer was Gen Domkat Bali, followed by Buhari who was GOC in Jos. Babangida was the Director, Army staff duties and plans. With respect to the difference in being enlisted and commissioned, Buhari enlisted April 1962, Babangida enlisted December 10 1962. Please don't listen to anyone who says that IBB was Buhar's senior in 1983, it's a lie from those who don't know the truth. IBB was only senior to officers like Abacha, Gado Nasko, and Idiagbon in 1983. And even those ones were not his juniors, they were his course mates, just that IBB and Vatsa were promoted ahead of them. Even when he was president, his chief of defence staff, General Bali was his senior, he enlisted in 1961, even before Buhari

Do you know that during the Civil War Babangida was a Major while Buhari was a Captain? I guess you know a major is senior to a captain. Even in this picture posted by the OP, Babangida was a Colonel while Buhari was a Lieutent-Colonel.

We can see why Nigeria went to the dogs. No be today.

Imagine that Awo, Zik, Ajasin, Maitama Sule, Alex Ekwueme and other technocrats were manning the affairs of this country a few years after the civil war?

But here we have army boys barely 30 years old, without any political grounding churning out decrees.

That Murtala destroyed the far better civil service we inherited at independence. He sacked massively. It became a tribal/sectarian thing after that.

I am the OP, and I posted the pic. In fact I still have a collection of historical pics like this, including a rarely seen one, where IBB stood before Buhari saluting him. Tell anyone who says Buhari was captain during the civil war while IBB was major to spare you the trash. Both of them were young majors, just that Buhari got his major shortly before IBB. Then in the pic, IBB was a Lt. Col, Buhari was fill colonel. I also noticed a post where you said Buhari was also sworn in as governor in the same room, same day. Not at all, Buhari was sworn in as governor, but not in the same room on that day. In fact, he was not in that room. I have the video of the swearing in and address by General Murtala on that day

Obasanjo can't be wrong. In his book, My Command, he said Buhari was a Captain and Commanding Officer of 2 Battalion while Babangida was a Major and Commanding Officer 82 Battalion. His second in command who took over from him when he was shot in Uzuakoli was also a Major. He was Vasta.
I want you to give me the ranks of both officers from 1962 to 1985.
