The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has become a beehive of activities for all the wrong reasons since Mr. Lawal Daura was appointed head of the Department of State Services (DSS) a little over a fortnight ago.

One NNPC ‘big boy’ told Reuters that personnel of the DSS have interrogated him 11 times already.

“The DSS has been harassing some of us,” the Group Executive Director, Refining and Petrochemicals, NNPC, Mr. Ian Udoh, was quoted as saying.

The DSS is investigating the crude oil swap deals in which the NNPC was enmeshed and which stank with sharp practices.

The crude swap deals entailed that the Nigerian nation gave a certain volume of crude oil to marketers in exchange for refined crude. Local refineries, which remained moribund throughout the Jonathan years, were therefore starved of crude as a consequence.

President Muhammadu Buhari is beaming his searchlight on the swap deals and the various deals the NNPC undertook in the past under former Petroleum Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

“There is a siege mentality here at the moment,” Udoh, who has been at the NNPC for 36 years, said.

He said Buhari’s initiative had given fresh legs to media coverage of the accounting holes worth over $20bn identified by two separate investigations, and that the public pressure was dominating management meetings.

The DSS operatives were said to be closely monitoring the headquarters of the corporation in Abuja, with soldiers guarding the building from raised platforms, while visitors were required to go through four separate security checks.

Buhari had dissolved the NNPC board upon assumption of office and on Monday in Abuja, a close confidante of the President and Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai had said “If Nigeria doesn’t kill NNPC, NNPC will kill Nigeria.”
