Ekiti rerun: Violence leaves one dead, others injured

By Mudiaga Affe

Violence erupted at Oye-Ekiti in Ekiti State on Monday when supporters of the Action Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party clashed during a free medical healthcare programme carried out by the AC.

The violence, which left one person dead and three others injured, was alleged to have started when a member of the Senate who hails from the town, Senator Ayo Arise, allegedly brought in some thugs to stop the free health programme from being carried out.

The dead person and the others that were injured were believed to be supporters of the AC.

But the PDP said the violence was carried out by the AC when the party's supporters attempted to attack Arise in his residence.

The AC had alleged while giving details of the incidence that when the people of the town resisted Arise's move to stop the mission, which comprised of doctors from within and outside Nigeria, the Senator and his thugs retreated to his residence.

"Arise's residence overlooks the road to Ikole-Ekiti where our governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was due to campaign on Monday," the party said in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

AC said that the armed thugs barricaded the road and, from their vantage point at Arise's residence, shot sporadically at the vehicles ferrying AC supporters to Ikole-Ekiti, thus killing one supporter and injuring three others.

The three injured persons, the party said, were now on life support at the Ikole General Hospital.

It gave the names of the injured supporters as Richard Fadahunsi, the AC councillorship candidate for Osi-Ekiti; Alice Oladunjoye of Ilogbo-Ekiti and Olawale Ajakaiye of Aiyetoro-Ekiti, while the dead supporter was yet to be identified.

However, the PDP, in its account, said it was Arise who narrowly escaped attack by thugs suspected to be AC loyalists.

According to PDP's statement signed by its Director of Communication, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, Arise was said to be holding meeting with PDP members in Oye, his hometown when the AC thugs swooped on them, riddling his house with bullets and damaging several vehicles.

One person later identified as Ahmed Saddiq was shot dead in the attack while Arise's Personal Assistant, Mr. Joseph Omowaye, and others were seriously injured. Omowaye's personal vehicle was said to have been set ablaze in the process.

Adebayo said; "With what is going on now, it is obvious that the AC has a sinister agenda. The party is not ready for the rerun election and the only way out is to throw the state into chaos with a view to getting the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state."

Meanwhile, the AC has called for the immediate redeployment of the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Mr. Chris Ola.

It also called for an urgent action by the Inspector-General of Police to prevent an impending breakdown of law and order in the state, ahead of the forthcoming rerun governorship election.

The party said, "We have been warning consistently that the desperation of the PDP ahead of the rerun is a danger signal. Though some have tagged us alarmists, the violence that broke out at Oye-Ekiti, the home town of Senator Ayo Arise of the PDP, has unfortunately proved us right."

It accused the Commissioner of Police of either incompetence or collusion with the PDP as it accused the police boss of making himself unavailable while AC officials tried to reach him during the violence.

The problem of Ekiti Politics is not Ayo Fayose, he is just a microscopic participant in the charade despite his rantings
The problem is The PDP and it's bunch of criminals who wants to reap where they did not sow, It's a known fact that no right thinking person voted for the party in the last election(or rather selection) but the Ebora of Owu(With his Crooked Cronies) in his Mighty Might imposed the impostor called Segun Oni on the good people of Ekiti which didn't go down well,
The Party is in dilema now that The Court of Appeal has compounded their woes by cancelling the illegality that brought the No Good governor in and they are resorting to the option that forced them in in the first place-VIOLENCE-.
God Help Ekiti and her good people as they try to bring sunshine back into the state by sweeping the People Dupe People party that held them hostage for so long,
IT'S WELL

Why didn't the court declare whoever the winner was, instead of anothe election in so volatile a state. What guarantees are there that the elections won't turn violent, that people can leave the safety of their homes to go and vote for whoemever they wanted? The courts should've declared a winner jare, like in Ondo state.
