Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, USA, has extended an invitation to President Muhammadu Buhari to visit the White House on July 20 for discussions pertaining corporation between both countries.

This meeting would be President Buhari’s 7th foreign trip away from Nigeria. He has accepted invitations to visit Cameroun immediately after the Ramadan fast, coupled with his visits to South Africa, United Kingdom, Germany, Chad and Niger republic.

As many anticipate the dividends of “change” President Buhari promised, Nigerians are left to ponder on the direct benefits such trips would bring to their lives.

As the nation continues to grapple with consistent attacks from Boko Haram in the North-east, a struggling economy and National Assembly controversies, President Buhari’s priority is directed at foreign trips in the midst of these challenges.

What is highly questionable is if the solutions to Nigeria’s challenges lie outside the shores of the country.

The President’s earlier trips to Niger and Chad came across to many as a political stunt in an attempt to create an impression that some action is being taken towards dealing with the resurgent activities of the terrorist group.

President Buhari visited his Chadian counterpart, General Idriss Deby on June 3 2015 and subsequently met with President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger republic. Days after these visits, Boko Haram have been unrelenting, carrying out several attacks leaving many to wonder why President Buhari prior to his election relegated the sect to a group which “could be easily crushed.”

Few Nigerians have said he seems to be oblivious and overwhelmed by the challenges of governance and perhaps the magical “change” slogan adopted by his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, is simply mere rhetoric with no substance.

The National Assembly crisis which is a direct fall-out of the sharp division in his party the APC is causing a setback to the legislature.

One wonders if this is the promised “parallel government” viz; dividing the nation’s legislature President Buhari’s campaign Manager, Rotimi Amaechi promised. The nation is now embalmed in crisis which needs the President’s urgent attention before he attends to any foreign trips or as they say “putting his house in order.”

One wonders if he has been informed about the emergence of a new sect “Yanlabaiku” in Kebbi preaching against western education. The lax response from President Buhari is strategically leading Nigeria away from the APC’s promised Eldorado. It is no gainsaying that Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the good leadership and better economy that the President and his party promised, weeks after the long waited presidential handover to a new Government.
