Sunday Oliseh, the new coach of Nigeria has returned to his base in Belgium. A Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) spokesman said Oliseh “has gone back but temporarily. He hasn’t gone finally because you know we have a game against Tanzania very soon and most of our players are in Europe.” This has kicked off a debate among Nigerian fans around why the coach should not be based in Nigeria, especially as his remit includes overseeing the development of the game and coaching in the country. The first thing is that Oliseh will be judged on how well the national team performs. So that should be his first piority. The overwhelming majority of the squad is based in Europe. It takes an incredible suspension of rational thinking to want the coach to be based in Nigeria, while practically all his players are based in Europe. Some have argued that he needs to live in Nigeria to be able to find good players in the domestic league. But most half decent domestic league players sign for foreign clubs before they are good enough for international duty. Oliseh should not be in Nigeria just to find the odd player in the local league that may be good enough for the national team. That’s what his assistants should be doing. A national team coach is meant to watch his players performing in their league matches as many times as possible. If most of your players are in Europe, it is a logistical nightmare operating out of Nigeria. Previous coaches have tended to invite players to the national team training camp “to see what they can do”. This is wrong. The coach should watch them performing for their clubs, monitor their form, and then decide whether they are worthy of a call up. The national team would benefit from regular training camps and get-together sessions during international breaks when Nigeria does not have a match. This should help the team gel and contribute towards building team chemistry. It is a lot easier to have these in Europe, considering where most of our players are based. Oliseh should use his European contacts to secure a training base for the team in, perhaps, Belgium. This would go a long way in achieving the objective of getting the “Super Eagles” to play as a team and not as individuals, which he set out when he was appointed. |
