ECONOMY: PRESIDENT JONATHAN TO TRAVEL TO ENGLAND TO MEET WITH INVESTORS

President Goodluck Jonathan is to travel to London today to meet with International Investors. The President is to preside over the meeting of Nigeria’s Honorary International Investors’ Council which is expected to last for three days.


The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati issued a statement on the purpose of the trip, pointing out the crucial aspects of the economy the meeting will be addressing which include generating long-term affordable finance for Nigeria's real sector, developing Nigeria's private equity and venture capital sectors to attract more foreign investments as well as Nigeria's information and communications technology master-plan.

In his statement, the Special Adviser also stated the public officials to be on the President’s entourage.

'President Jonathan will be accompanied by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, Senator Nenadi Usman, Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga, Hon. Isiaka Bawa, the Coordinating of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr. Olusegun Aganga and the Governor of the Central Bank, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi.

'Others on the President's entourage include the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, the Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Prof. Viola Onwuliri and heads of relevant government agencies.
The President will be meeting with former South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr. Alec Erwin; the Vice-President of Hewlett-Packard's Enterprise Group in Europe, Middle-East and Africa, Mr. Olivier Suinat; a former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shaukat Aziz and the Director of Shell's International Upstream Business, Mr. Andrew Brown among others.

President Jonathan begins four-day visit to Cote d'Ivoire

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan, will Wednesday begin a four-day visit to Cote d’Ivoire, where he will join other ECOWAS leaders in Yamassoukrou for the 42nd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

A statement here Tuesday by presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that at the end of the ECOWAS Summit on Thursday, President Jonathan will, at the invitation of host President Alassane Ouattara, embark on a three-day state visit to Cote d’Ivoire.

According to the statement, the Summit will be dominated by ongoing efforts to restore peace, democracy and political stability to Mali and Guinea-Bissau, two countries where Nigeria is playing key roles in the restoration of normalcy.

A new ECOWAS chairperson will also be elected at the Summit.

President Jonathan and other Heads of State and Government will also receive and consider the 2012 annual report of the President of the ECOWAS Commission as well as the report of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers.

The Nigerian leader will be accompanied on the trip by First Lady, Patience, Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), parliamentarians Ifeanyi Okowa (Senator), Isa Hassan and Nkeiru Onyejiocha (members of the house of Representatives), the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed, and other officials of the Federal Government.

Various agreements aimed at fostering trade and economic relations between Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire will be concluded and signed in Abidjan before the end of the visit.

President Jonathan, whose entourage also includes representatives of the Nigerian Private Sector, will also meet with Nigerians resident in Cote D’Ivoire before returning to Nigeria on Saturday.

President Jonathan Drops Wife From Washington DC Trip, To Travel With 73 Delegates

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has dropped his controversial wife, Patience, from his 73-man delegation heading to Washington DC for the “U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit” which begins next Monday.

Mr. Jonathan is billed to arrive in the US capital on Sunday, rolling in with one of the largest delegations at the three-day summit, but it is a trip governed by fear of the unknown, including possible uncomfortable encounters with members of the press, protesters and angry citizens.

Observers say the Nigerian leader’s decision to drop his wife from the trip stems from deep concern that she might be humiliated in Washington DC over her denunciation of the kidnap of hundreds of Nigerian school girls in Chibok, Borno State, in April.

Mrs. Jonathan and Kema Chikwe, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Women leader, were among those within top government circles who initially questioned and denounced the abduction story, claiming it was a farce. A television appearance by Mrs. Jonathan went viral, and has become the butt of several spoofs on the Internet. President Jonathan’s acceptance of the farce theory was responsible for the delay in rescue efforts that could have saved several of the girls.

Mrs. Jonathan is also widely remembered for leading a thorough humiliation of officials of the Government Girls Secondary School from where the girls were abducted, including the Principal, Mrs. Asaba Kwabura, who she ordered detained alongside Naomi Nyadar a lead campaigner for the “BringBackOurGirls” movement.

Presidency sources told SaharaReporters it is feared that Mrs. Obama, one of the best-known supporters of “BringBackOurGirls,” might not be favorably disposed to interacting with Mrs. Jonathan.

Meanwhile, it has also been learned that President Jonathan has himself had his request for a one-on-one meeting with President Obama turned down.

In a further reflection of the extent of the fear of the unknown during the trip, Mr. Jonathan has also turned down a request to be at a “solidarity rally” by a group of praise-singers who call themselves “The Diaspora Nigerians in America group,” scheduled for August 5 in front of the Nigerian Embassy.

A press statement issued by the group today confirmed Mr. Jonathan’s decision to bail out of the self-serving love-fest.

Governors Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, and Isah Yuguda of Bauchi will accompany President Jonathan to the United States. Also on the entourage will be the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Youth Culture and Tourism, Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison Madueke.

Businessmen listed on the entourage include Femi Otedola, Wale Tinubu and Kola Adeshina of Sahara Energy. The rest of the list is made up of aides, advisers and staff.
