Network Security Penetration And Testing. by brianromel(op): 1:51pm On Mar 13, 2009
I finally come to the conclusion that most network engineers and administrators in Nigeria are pretty dumb. They go around doing and thinking theoritics rather that being more practical.
I won't say i'm a total IT person,i don't even have a certification, but most areas i know eg webdesign, graphics, networking, ccna and bits of vb. I learnt on my own due to my interest and liking of it.
Which brings me to my topic.
I had a chat with a friend who is a network engineer and certified ccna dude about the ease at which most networked equipment can be easily compromised in nigeria, and his saying its not possible than nigerian's aren't that advanced.
Which annoyed me,cos normal every day users of mtn and zain mobile internet have found ways to perform some basic url attacks.
More funny is the availability of a myriad of free network penetration tools on the net, that can be used to perform some major damage,to either a cabled or radio networks.
Tools like cain and abel, aircrack ng suite, backtrack.

More funny thing about these tools, are that the creators post videos and manuals showing exactily what these tools can do.
Although some of them work on linux os eg nimblex and backtrack, meaning a need to learn unix commands are needed, but hey imagine after seeing the video's,men you would go find a unix command manual to learn some.

The funny part is that with up coming hacker and new treats to networks, you did think that most net admin's and engineers would be learning more and more ways to secure their networks.Instead they are not.

My brother, thats 9ja for you. I always believe that nigerians deliberately sabotage themselves when they get a good opportunity with the typical excuse of of "na naija we dey". For God's sakes do you think British Telecoms, Vodafone or Orange will hire network engineers that are not worth their salt and have been thoroughly tested to show that they have the required knowledge. Am sure that the network engineers at Glo, Mtn & Zain are the ones responsible for all this Freedom browsing or whatever. They either deliberately sabotage the system to get some cool cash or they are just too damn incompetent. You can't try this nonsense in yankee or you will be fired on the spot and even be liable for prosecution if you are found to be negligent. Even nigerian's who are there behave themselves, but when they come back here they go back to their old ways. Aaaarg  angry angry angry. Nigeria has no standard cyber crime bill or law enforcement agency to tackle the esecurity problems its facing. The Min of Finance just recently launched Oracle Financials and Network Systems Integration. Before you know it, some smart people in power will hijack it to loot billions of naira and then blame it on yahoo boys or whatever. The effcc and icpc are just deluding themselves. I am a certified EC Council Ethical Hac-ker and am taking courses at Offensive Security (the creators of backtrack), so when i come across companies with incompetent network engineers like these, sometimes i don't pity them. Because, they were not hired on what they knew but who they. Abi, no be naija we dey. Its high time serious professionals in nigeria like network engineers, bankers, accountants etc stand up and conduct themselves like their counterparts all over the world.

I feel you my brother.
I had a friend come in from uk,two after he came back he ask me and a friend if we could show him round town, what i didn't know was that i was taking a lesson in wardriving.
He was basically looking for places with wireless access points and hotspots which he promptly cracked their W.E.P keys networks around sweet sen allen and adeola odeku on the island.
Each of the networks he cracked took him between 15 and 45mins,in one case we had to leave the laptop in the car while we ate.
I asked him if its possible to crack a W.P.A key,he said its possible only that it will take some time and possibly some take home assignments.
We finally ended the day at a cybercafe around my area,it took him only 5 mins to access admin status of the cafe, copy data of their ticket serve, and 3 other users systems and as our tin finished he logged of the admins system from the network.
I had to ask myself then,if some of us got wiser, what would happen to network safety in nigeria.Becos its seems we don't care

hmmm,

well for a while now i av seen yu brian hoppin around forums talkin about IT pips in naija jumpin to place of dia counterparts in the uk and yankee.

yu seem to forget summin, as populous as IT in all its ramifications are in naija its relativly a new genre of technology in naija. we are all certified in dis and dat becos we nid to be at a point we re employable, wia we can get mony to chop.

do you knw all the mony and efforts it takes to become an ethical hacker- a frend just got a box of books from ec-counsil dat took like months and costs around $3-4k. how many pple can afford dat.

i want to be a pen tester but wias d mony but insted i avopted for mcse and ccna prayin to get to a place i can get into ec-counsil. funny is dat most of the naija pple wu attain all dis professional stats end up outsyd d country. ow many ccie's do yu av hia and yu nid to find out ow many naijas wu are ccie.

pen testing is a biuty to lern and knw and it takes process becos of all the power dat rests in yur hand wen yu become a professional in it. if employers are willing to train dia netwrk admins on security and all we wnt be in a place wia internet junkies like cash12u can stat makin mouth with your freedom and lil proxy tunnelers to by-pass pstn netwrks.

solution

brian NL is a biutiful place lets create a forum to train ourselves on securin our netwrks from incidents from dia we wld hav done summin for ourselves and our netwrk environment. i await such a forum
