There is tension in oil-rich city of Warri, Delta State following violent protest by members of the Uvwie Local Government Area chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over change of leadership.
One Ariyor Francis was said to have emerged as chairman in controversial circumstances leading to the violent protest that resulted in destruction of properties in parts of the commercial city.
Already, the affected areas have been deserted by residents for fear of being victims of violent attack by sympathizers of the union, as well as the fear of being arrested indiscriminately by the police who have taken over the areas to restore normalcy.
Meanwhile, 44 persons have been arrested by the police in connection with the violent protest but the breakthrough came with a price as two officers are now receiving treatment at separate hospitals following gunshot injuries which they sustained.
The affected officers included a Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was shot on the buttocks and later rushed to the Warri Central Hospital; and a sergeant who hit by stray bullet on his right elbow and rushed to the Nigeria Navy Hospital, Effurrun.
Confirming the development yesterday in Asaba, the state capital, Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Celestina Kalu said the police received information about the violent protest occasioned by the leadership change in the union
“Based on the report, patrol teams were quickly mobilized to the scene, and at Jakpa junction, the protesters shot at the policemen, as a result of which an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was hit on his buttocks by a bullet from one of the protesters. The victim was rushed to central Hospital Warri for treatment.
“Later, the police re-enforced and trailed the protesters to Agofure Motor Park on NPA-DSC express way, Warri where the said protesters had gathered to cause more crisis and destruction and arrested forty-four (44) male suspects.
“Some of the protesters also on the same day attacked policemen on duty at Dofect motor park, Effurun, shooting sporadically into the air and in the process, a police sergeant was hit by stray bullet on his right elbow. The injured policeman was rushed to Nigeria Navy Hospital Effurun for treatment,” she said.
According to her, normalcy has been restored to the area while investigation is in progress and warned members of the public to always respect the law of the land and refrain from taking the law into their hands
