It's pathetic of how most nigerians tagged the january 1966 coup an igbo coup because nnamdi azikiwe and michael opara were not killed.the following is the reasons it should not be tagged an igbo coup.
1.a yoruba major was among the three main pioneers of the coup,they are nzeogwu,adegboyega and ifeajuna.
2.nnamdi azikiwe knows that he will also be killed that's why he left the country after his brother ifeajuna told him when the coup will be carried out.
3.lots of nigerians were aware of the coup but they didn't know the particular date it will be carried out,a yoruba and some igbo majors also advice advised nzeogwu not to carryout the coup.
4.when the coup plotters were arrested they said the reason they carried out the coup was to installed awolowo as the president,major adegboyega also stated the same in his book 'why we struck'.
5.an igbo officer unegbe was also killed in the coup.
6.akintola would have not been killed if didn't launch attack against the coup plotters.
7.aguiyi ironsi was among those targetted during the coup because the coup plotters knows that if they didn't kill him,he will take over power because he was the most senior in the nigerian military then.
8.the coup happened earlier than expected because ahmadu bello and the northerners were planning a jihad across the nation from the 17th of january 1966 so they interrupted them by executing the coup on the 15th of january.
9.aguiyi ironsi quenched the coup in lagos.
10.ojukwu secured the life of emir of kano during the coup.

11. Why should Ndiigbo want to control the centre, when crude oil was just discovered in the Midwest and Eastern region, which were both under Okpara and Osadebey leadership?

Since we are greedy, the most greedy position would have been weakening the centre and tightening our grip on the two region to make sure we keep the bulk of the petrol dollars in the East and Midwest, and not allow the Odua-Arewa have any sniff of it.

But what Ironsi was trying to do, was exactly opposite of this, his unitary plan if it succeeded would have allowed the Odua-Arewa have more access to the Midwest and Eastern region petrol dollars.

Something was amiss with that Coup. It was totally Anti Igbo.

What Okpara and Osadebey wanted then was less attachment to the centre, ie to keep the petrol dollars within the SE/SS. The coup plotters were doing the exact opposite.

we know it was not an igbo coup but power nzeogwu was a very brave and patriotic learner and the real power mongers played the game perfectly and spun some serious grade a propaganda and they're still winning today
