In continuation of its special road safety assignment to curb incessant accidents by truck drivers on the highways, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ (FRSC) Mobile Court, on Thursday, sentenced two drivers from the Dangote Cement Company to three months each with hard labour. The two drivers, Sani Ahmed and Umar Musa, were arraigned before the FRSC mobile court at Oluyole, Ibadan, along Lagos – Ibadan expressway, and found guilty of dangerous and reckless driving capable of causing death to other motorists. The men who were among twenty-two others who were arraigned for various driving offences by the FRSC were specially found guilty of reckless driving inimical to other road users as well as driving without valid drivers’ licences among other traffic offences. Zonal Public Education Officer, Christy Obasi, noted in a statement: “Ahmed Sani drove his unregistered fully loaded truck with cement in a reckless and dangerous manner, inimical to the safety of himself and other road users. The truck had no single registration number plate but company inscription of “IBESE 5”. Obasi said the driver’s conduct on the highway was reported by several other motorists to different patrol teams along the highway which led to an alert and subsequent hunt and arrest of the driver for prosecution. The Court sentenced Mr Ahmed Sani to three months imprisonment with hard labour and payment of Eighty-One Thousand Naira fine. The second driver, Musa Umar was also arraigned for driving a truck with registration number RMG 29 XA loaded with cement, dangerously on the highway and without a valid driving licence. Umar reportedly pleaded guilty and showed remorse for his act with a promise to be more responsible henceforth. The court however convicted him but with option of fine of N60, 000 while his truck remain impounded until the company produced another licensed driver to drive the truck. In Lagos, 12 other truck drivers were prosecuted for 19 traffic offences and were all sentenced. In Ogun State, 27 truck drivers arrested by various patrol teams on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were equally charged to mobile court in Sagamu, Ogun State for offences ranging from unsecured containers on trucks, dangerous driving, driving with worn out tyres, driving without valid driver licence. Out of the 27drivers, 22 drivers were sentenced while 5 drivers were discharged and acquitted by the court. The FRSC assignment tagged ‘Operation Scorpion’ which was launched on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway last July 27 has continued to track down or reckless and dangerous driving. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/08/dangote-truck-drivers-jailed-reckless-driving/ |
