Should Barcanista Be Given His Own Column? by TippyTop(m): 10:23pm On Aug 13, 2015 |
Why can't we read barcanista in our national dailies or a slot in a TV program? This guy is too intelligent to be doling out free political advice free on Nairaland. What do ya all think? cc:vanguard, punch, thenation, etc. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Is this the PDP reaction to the media reference of Passingshot's article on SR? You guys are in pain because none of your daily threads and posts has ever been referenced by any media outlet, not even the numerous bogus blogs flying around. I feel your pain. You want Barcanista to get a column on a national daily, yet his blog is empty , useless and uninspiring. No wonder PDP failed woefully, not with these nuisances as supporters Column ko, row ni 10 Likes 2 Shares |

TippyTop:We're already having a discussion, you need not copy the mods. To the honest part: As much as Barcanista's threads (the ones he gets to poke at the government and not the ones concerning cloning monikers) are interesting reads, let me be quick to say that I don't see him surviving the pressures of opinion articles on prints for several reasons. 1. A typical Barcanista thread is riddled with links to back his claims (which is good). The same is useless in prints. You can make references but not put sources since it's not a school project 2. Print columnists, though could sometimes exhibit partiality, are often "truth writers"; something which Barcanista is not. His articles may be factual on the surface but it does not really strike the typical balance print columnists would touch. 3. Unlike Femi Aribisala, Gbenga Omotosho, Sam Omatseye and a host of others, Barcanista's followers are restricted to Nairaland (I stand to be corrected), which is not the issue. The question really is "how many of his followers would pick a print brand to read his piece"? (Remember, print columnists are also expected to affect the sales of papers). 4. Barcanista may not be taken seriously because he had duly criticized Jonathan's government before switching to criticizing Buhari's government. While many may brand him as money-oriented, I believe Barcanista is ordained to play opposition. Imagine someone who had been criticizing an incumbent with the assurance that he (Jonathan) would be unseated, only for him to switch before Buhari won the elections. 5. Columnists are not swift to assume. Barcanista lacks this. A typical Gbenga Omotosho would never conclude his piece; rather, he would leave it open so that his readers would only be left with ambiguity, unlike the latter who opens a thread with this topic; "Three months in Office: Buhari is a liar - Barcanista". 6. His personal blog lacks readership and innovation, what values do you expect him to add to a print media if he cannot handle his own personal property I'm tired abeg, I could go on and on though. He's not just ready yet. Maybe in the nearest future, but obviously not now. Punch, The Nation, et al still have a host of Professors they're yet to feature (trust me, I know this) on opinion... 6 Likes |
