NIMET Flood Alert: Delta Commences Clearing of Blocked Drains, Waterways

DOMINIC OKONTA
THE devastating nature of the 2012 flood left indelible marks in the minds of many Nigerians, especially the coastal communities who recorded a lot of carnages and loss of property to the natural force.
The efficient management of NIMET’s vital information by the National Emergency Agency (NEMA), which swiftly sent the alarm signal to affected states and across the grass root door posts prone to flood, woke up their consciousness, which helped to curb what would have resulted in heavy human carnage and loss of property.
Fortunately, the impact in Delta State was mild, in terms of human carnage due to the proactive measures, swiftly employed by the state government following the earlier prediction by the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET), which paved the way for the effective management of the crisis.
With the wave of fear and tension accompanied the news about the intention of the Camerounian Government and Niger Republic to release volume of water from their dams to reduce pressure and avert its collision (which might split more calamities), Delta State government has again expressed its readiness to handle the situation promptly and effectively.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. (Bar) John Obukohwo Nani, told The Weekend Pointer that the state government is battle ready to manage the situation more effectively and efficiently than she has done in 2012 flood scenario.
As parts of the State Government’s proactive measures, the Ministry of Environment, he said, has declared today, Saturday, August15 as compulsory sanitation exercise across the state, especially flood prone-areas to open up blocked drains and natural waterways.
The environmental exercise, according to him, stemmed from the impacts of the heavy rainfall resulting in the flooding of parts of the state, adding that he has ordered for the immediate removal of illegal structures, including caravan blocking the natural water ways and drains.
The state government he said, has embarked on aggressive enlightenment campaign across the flood-prone-areas, especially in the coastal communities, adding that his inspection team (made up the Director of Ecology and others) visited Oko community, near Asaba, the state capital to access the impacts of coastal gully erosion on the community and to educate and alert them against possible flood action.
He said that the Ministry will embark on enlightenment and inspection tour to Patani Local Government Area have first hand information about the environmental impacts of coastal and other environmental sanitation issue to curb natural disasters.
The state government, according to him has mapped out strategies on how to evacuate affected residents of the coastal communities when situation calls for such measures.
The Weekend Pointer learnt the state government has concluded plan and had mapped out the possible locations to build temporary camps for victims, with modern medical equipment and other essential comforts.
