Corruption is a socio-economic problem identified by Nigerians as endemic and a serious bane of national development.

Apart from its crippling impact on the development agenda, corruption has continued to portray the country in a bad light in the international community.

The problem has remained unabated because of lip service often paid to the crusade against corruption by those in the corridor of power.

One of these corrupt practices is money laundering, which has put the country’s economy to its knees.

President Muhammadu Buhari during an official visit to the United States, solicited President Barack Obama’s assistance in retrieving one hundred and fifty billion dollars laundered in foreign banks by Nigerians in the last decade.

President Buhari equally revealed that some immediate past public office holders had indeed acted with impunity in the oil industry, selling about one million barrel per day illegally at the detriment of the entire Nigerians.

Proceeds from the corrupt deals are obviously part of the money laundered in the united states.

It is pathetic that this vicious cycle has continued despite celebrated cases of loots recovered from a late head of state general Sani Abacha as well as some former governors.

Disheartening as the situation might be, it is pertinent that the present administration should brace up to the challenge of repatriating our stolen billions of dollars in order to bring back the economy on sound footing.

The fact that President Buhari has made a crusade against corruption a central pursuit shows that it is poised to give what it takes to recover the stolen loots.

Therefore, this administration should thoroughly investigate those behind the stolen one hundred and fifty billion dollars.

The government should continue to seek the cooperation and goodwill of foreign government who are concerned by the level of corruption in the country.

There is the need to strengthen the anti-corruption agencies through adequate funding and personnel training.

The Judiciary arm should expedite judgement on public office holders standing trial for various financial crimes, to serve as deterrent to others.

The issue of removal of immunity clause from the country’s constitution has become even more imperative, as some governors hide under it to evade scrutiny while in office.

Also, it has become exigent that the practice of plea bargaining be disallowed, as it is a travesity of justice and gives room for corruption to thrive.

This will send a strong signal to current public office holders that the present administration is ready to walk the talk on issue of corruption.
