For job seekers, and even those already working, there are 6 set of skills for you to have if you want to be successful in any work environment. In no particular order, they are:

1. Communication: Communication skills are very important for every individual. Many job seekers have lost some offers because they can't speak properly; and this is evident in how such persons "package" their CV. That alone can turn off any potential employer. Invest time in studying how to write sentences properly, master spelling of words and punctuation, and ultimately take classes to boost your speaking.

2. Working with numbers: Numbers are what every business deals with. Your ability to manipulate numbers will go a long way in keeping you on a job. I suggest you learn how to work with software such as Microsoft Excel and the likes.

3. Information Technology: Knowing fully well that the world is going "techy", you should not be left behind. Don't rely on old ways of doing things. IT skills cut across every discipline and business sector. Invest in those IT skills that are relevant to your discipline and the area(s) you work. It pays off in the long run to help retain your position at some point.

4. Team Playing: Working with people is a very important factor in determining how well you perform on a job. Being a "one man army" will only shield you from gaining much in the long run. You never know where your team mates may end up; so being able to work with people and keeping a good image has its benefits.

5. Problem solving: Every business is being set up to solve one or more problems. Being skillful at solving problems internally, however, is very rare these days. You should channel conscious effort into developing your problem solving skills. Let me add here that being creative at solving problems is also helpful.

6. Improvement: This is something most people neglect the most. After landing that job you've been chasing, or attaining a certain height in your career, one thing that should always remain on your mind is self improvement. Please devote your time to engaging in practices that will surely see you improve, such as taking courses, or attending seminars to learn better ways to do what you do best.

It took me a while to write this, but I strongly believe that after reading this, you'll surely gain something tangible to fast track your career and business.

Mods, kindly move this to front page so we all can learn from it.
