This article is aimed at guiding individual
cooks especially ladies and mothers on the
things they can do when foods becomes
more salty than required.
We’ve all experienced it, you are rushing
to serve the dinner so you quickly added
salt to your food without much precaution
and as you tried to have a taste of the
delicious meal; Alas, salty is an
understatement to qualify the food. I can’t
imagine the emotion on your face right
now but let me guess; disturbed, confused,
angry or even panic.
All good meals are about balance of the
five tastes namely sweet, salty, sour, bitter
and umami (savory). All these tastes should
complement each other else there will be a
problem if one of them becomes too strong.
What I’m trying to say in essence is that
you should always try to balance out each
of the flavors to as to have a perfect meal. I
hope this helps someday.
Here are some solutions depending on
the one that best suit your delicacy and
urgency;
Rinse: The salt can be rinsed off in case of
foods like rice, spaghetti, steamed meat or
vegetables.
Dilutions: This is applicable to soups. Add
water, coconut milk or cream to dilute the
excess seasoning. Increasing the volume of
the soup will help spread out the salt and
dissipate the saltiness.
Raw potatoes: Do you know that potatoes
absorb salt as they cook? Therefore you
can peel some potatoes and slice them into
your salty food, the raw potatoes will
absorb the salt as they cook briefly(until
they look translucent) then you can
remove them using slotted spoon and this
will surely reduce the salt content.
Another seasoning: Adding other
seasonings that are not salt based but
rather herbs and spices can help dissipate
the saltiness in your food.
Sugar: I said earlier that a good meal is
about balance of the five tastes, depending
on your delicacy, adding sugar to foods like
beans will reduce its saltiness.
Freezing: You can resuscitate your meal
on the edge of death by freezing it. This
method is only applicable when you do not
intend to serve the food immediately.
