The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) has accused some federal
and Kwara state lawmakers of abandoned
their responsibilities of lawmaking to become
bodyguards to a financial crime suspect.


The suspect was Senate President Bukola
Saraki’s wide, Toyin, who was accompanied by
some senators, members of the House of
Representatives and members of the Kwara
State House of Assembly to the national
headquarters of the anti-graft agency on
Tuesday, July 28, 2015, when she was invited
for questioning over alleged shady deals
linked to her companies when she was the
first lady of Kwara State.


According to the latest edition of the EFCC
ALERT!, a monthly e-magazine published by
the Media Unit of the anti-graft agency, the
presence of the lawmakers and their
motorcade caused consternation and
melodrama at the premises of the
commission, in what was supposed to be ‘a
serious issue’.


The report in the e-magazine titled:
“Distinguished Bodyguards?” and written by
one of the assistant editors in the unit,
particularly picked on Senator Dino Melaye,
whom it taunted as a fake social crusader,
and accused him and his colleagues of
turning a simple invitation to Saraki’s wife by
the EFCC to answer for alleged graft offences
into a ‘carnival of sorts’.


“He was best known for his prominent role
during the 2012 protests against the removal
of oil subsidy. At rallies, he thrilled his
audience with racy speeches, posing as the
‘voice of the voiceless’.


“The recent actions of Dino Melaye, who currently holds the lofty position of a senator
of the Federal Republic, representing Kogi-
west constituency in Nigeria’s Eighth National
Assembly, have however, received flaks from members of the society, who have now
tagged him a ‘meddlesome bodyguard and
interloper’.


“On July 28, 2015, Melaye, who also serves as
chairman, Senate Ad-hoc Committee on
Media and Publicity, caused consternation at
the EFCC headquarters, Abuja.”

Shameful that these shameless lawmakers abandoned the people they are supposed to represent to represent a criminal. I just hope their allowance was deducted for that day. Big old fools who don't know their job description.
