UPTH Threatens Sanction Over UNIPORT Student’s Death by Nobody: 10:38am On Sep 12, 2015 |
The management of the University of Port Harcourt
Teaching Hospital has vowed to sanction any
medical personnel found guilty of negligence that
might have led to the death of an undergraduate of
Theatre Arts in the University of Port Harcourt, Miss
Kelechi Precious.
The Chief Medical Director of UPTH, Prof. Aaron
Ojule, made this pledge in Port Harcourt as a result
of the anger that followed the death of Precious at the
hospital.
Precious died at the UPTH on Sunday, August 31,
2015, leading to a protest by students, who claimed
that she was refused treatment; a development that
led to her death.
But Ojule said the management of UPTH had begun
an investigation into the allegations that Precious
died as a result of neglect. He expressed regret over
the death of the student, describing it as unfortunate.
“The management hereby wishes to state that the
circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident
is already being investigated and where any member
of staff is found culpable as being alleged, adequate
disciplinary measures would be applied according to
extant civil service rules and professional codes.
“We wish to state we have standard operating
procedure in all aspects of our work in the hospital
and we will evaluate the events surrounding this
death against this background,” Ojule assured.
Ojule said was unethical for any medical personnel
to show any act of negligence, especially while on
duty while adding that nobody found wanting at the
end of the investigation would be spared.
He sympathised with the family of the late student
and pointed out that the hospital was oversubscribed,
resulting to the availability of less bed spaces for
patients.
Ojule appealled to government to consider the
challenge of congestion at the UPTH and find a
solution to the situation.
The UPTH CMD urged the UNIPORT Students’
Union Government to call its students to order,
recalling that doctors and nurses took to their heels
due to the threat to their lives by protesting students
of the university. |
