Human Development Indices In North Poorest – Osinbajo by AnambraDota: 8:56pm On Sep 12, 2015 |
The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has expressed
concern over the poverty in the country despite her
position as the largest economy in Africa, immense
population and status as the sixth largest producer of
oil.
Speaking at the Northern Reawakening Forum
Summit on Saturday at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja,
Osinbajo observed that in the 19 Northern States of
Nigeria, the human development indices “are by far
poorer than the rest of the country.”
But he stressed that the challenges are the same
across the country, saying “the difference is not of a
kind but in degrees,” according to a statement by the
Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to the
Vice President, Laolu Akande.
Osijbajo however assured that the Federal
Government is committed to tackling issues that
affected the life of Nigerians in any part of the
country.
He said, “The Northern States occupy about 70 per
cent of the land mass of the country, they also have
the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the
country, the lowest rate of child enrolment in
schools, highest number of unemployed young
people, highest levels of poverty and faces the
challenge of inter-ethic and inter-religious conflict
including the Boko Haram terrorism.”
The VP Vice said the Northern Nigerian Economic
Summit of 2012 was the first fora to draw attention
to some of the depressing statistics about the
condition of the North.
According to him, the Buhari Administration has
been very active in interventions in the North-East,
due to the immediacy of the crisis in that axis of the
nation.
He stated the need for short term strategy of
immediate hardship alleviation as well as a long term
plan to build the infrastructure that most closely
affected the economic life of the most vulnerable
citizens.
Besides, the VP said there is also the need to build
institutions that would make more of an impact in
the years to come and beyond.
Osinbajo called on Nigerian leaders to aspire to win
the people’s heart rather than enrich themselves
with state resources.
Osinbajo recalled Nigerian founding fathers in the
North such as “Sir Ahamu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto,
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Aminu Kano, J.
S. Tarka and countless others who clearly understood
the varied issues afflicting the region, thought
through them, laid the plans and worked selflessly to
realize them.”
He commended the present crop of Nigerian
leadership to such selflessness and vision.
Applauding the theme of the Summit, “Building a
Safe, Secure and Economically Inclusive Northern
Nigeria”, the VP decried the derailment from the
foundations set by the founding fathers which has led
to the challenges confronting the country.
The Chairman of the Forum, Mohammed Kumalia,
said discussions at the Summit would help in the
rehabilitation and rebuilding of the North.
The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum,
Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State,
said the panacea for the backwardness and poverty of
the North is addressing the problem of agriculture
and agro-allied industry as well as creative ventures
in region. www.punchng.com/news/human-development-indices-in-north-poorest-osinbajo/ |

AnambraDota: Foolishly you fail to see that this is a call to arms for rapid development of the North, and that Osibanjo is actually doing us good service by calling for resources to be marshalled for the cause . Keep roving in the wilderness without leadership or bearing while you still suffer the same poverty, worsened by the sickest of backward soceital ills like armed robbery, ritual killing, cannibalism, baby factories, drug trafficking, prostitution, fake drugs etc and lacking the political relevance or leadership to even help your sorry selves. I'm also sure you were too blinded by bigotry to have seen the statement below: AnambraDota: Pathetic Osu, keep peddling hatred while the North and SW consolidate on President Buhari's presidency . www.nairaland.com/attachments/2850809_1a1_jpeg5c7ffa04e10b1d8b075069e1b63455e8 www.nairaland.com/attachments/2850810_ff0_jpeg1c4d5feddb396824605f5f7a05748715 |

QuotaSystem:I learnt you are not a northerner. But that is beside the point. There has always been a northern call-to -arms since the beginning of this country through ahmadu bello and co, yet it has not changed anything. The north will still remain the shitthole that it is. Its massive dependence through the decades on incompetent govts and its consistent gross misplacement of priorities and religious intolerance will always ensure it remains a shitthole. The SW too is undergoing a gradual systematic almajirisation of its people. The southwestern civil servants are the most poorly treated in the entire south. Goodluck. 6 Likes 1 Share |

QuotaSystem:There is nothing to consolidate, nigga. It is still the same old corrupt, paedophilic northern leaders. There is nothing special about them. 2019 will come and go and the north will still remain a backward habitat Btw, igbos don't need your dafft president. The SE have always developed irrespective of FG govt support. Afterall, we get the least federal allocation anyway for years. Buhari wouldn't even know what to do with a people with such highly developed socio-economics . 7 Likes 1 Share |

This attention on one portion of d country is getting sickening! There is widespread poverty and non-development in all areas! This kind of rubbish is what brings disaffection among a people... spread d development and appointments around! No area is more relevant than the other! This is how we keep hearing of how d North is educationally 'disadvantaged' to justify unjust lowering of bars n standards for them in every way yet Southerners are not fit for appointments! They have piloted d affairs of ds country more times than any other region yet they keep trying to rouse sympathy for d so called non-development to d detriment of others! How is it the fault of the South? With all d natural resources at their disposal which are conveniently not commandeered as belonging to d FG is there any justification for this 'call-to-arms'? We need to be careful! This is why a regional system of government is seriously needed so people n leaders are forced to think and produce what dey need for their development as well as control their resources! In this current system resources meant for one region are conveniently and 'legally' allocated to another and nobody can do anything! Still we continue to hear of backwardness...for how long! Is there no end?! 1 Like 1 Share |
