Nigeria's Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has blasted the present crop of northern leaders blaming them for the backwardness of the region.He said that the northern leaders abandoned diligence and selfless service and resorted to personal aggrandizement.

He was speaking at the Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) Summit, held under the theme “Building a Safe, Secure and Economically Inclusive Northern Nigeria” and held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on Saturday.

He said: “Our history reminds us of the visionary leaders in Nigeria, who fired our imagination through their vision, diligence and selfless service, who did not live or fight to enrich themselves; they did not leave vast personal estates behind, but their names and legacies live in the hearts of the people”, the VP said.“Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Aminu Kano, J. S. Tarka and countless others clearly understood the varied issues afflicting the region, thought through them, laid the plans and worked selflessly to realize them”.

He said that in the 19 northern states the human development indices “are by far poorer than the rest of the country”.Osinbajo said the Northern Nigerian Economic Summit of 2012 was the first forum to draw attention to some of the depressing statistics about the condition of the North.

To help him realise his aims, the 36states should be made more autonomous by allowing them to be fully responsible for the sources and applications of Funds in their states. And by strict compliance with the constitutional provisions of Nigeria, PAY NOT MORE OR LESS THAN 40% OF ALL STATES FUNDS TO THE FG. Then the FG can use its own Funds, the agregate of the 40% from each state of the Federation to play a BALANCING acts in the economy, education, social, political etc of every state of the Federation. Afterall, the FG is still responsible for external and internal securities; army and police; audit and accounts etc, so what on earth is the husstles and the problems, that the biafrans, bokoharams, the militants etc will not let Azikiwe, Awo, Ahmadu Bello etc rest in peace?

You really expect the north to agree to your proposal?
Did you miss the entire national conference and the hullabaloo over state allocations?
Despite all the military rule when they had fiat to do WHATEVER they wanted, did they develop the north?
And even if you lack funds to build roads, hospitals, even schools- did they bother to educate their people, even if it's under mango trees?
If they did would 'almajiris' agree to be used as canon fodder in religious crises?
(Funny though- most of them can recite the Quran, but don't know how to count...)
The problem has never been the north; the problem has been the norther elite. Or mafia. Or 'caliphate'.
