The intra-party crisis rocking the Ekiti State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took a dramatic dimension on Tuesday with the arrest of a former governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua.

Olumilua was arrested at his Ikere Ekiti country home and whisked to the state police command headquarters, Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The supporters of the former governor claimed that he was arrested based on a petition forwarded to the Police by the APC Secretary in the state, Paul Omotoso, accusing Olumilua of holding a “subversive party meeting in his house where he nominated somebody as minister without consulting the party executive committee.”

But Omotoso in a telephone chat with our reporter denied the arrest of Olumilua.

The party scribe said: “He wasn’t arrested, maybe the police invited him.”

Repeated calls to Olumilua’s mobile phone were not answered and text messages sent to him were not replied at the time of filing this report.

But an interest group in the Ekiti APC, the Action Group, condemned the alleged arrest by the police, describing it as “intolerable abuse of phantom power.”

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Segun Dipe, the Action Group said Olumilua whom it described as an APC member, an elder and a leader of the party did not deserve to be treated that way.

Dipe said: “The offence allegedly committed by Evangelist Olumilua as enumerated in the petition written by Barr. Omotoso are that he organized a ‘subversive’ party meeting in his house and he nominated somebody and a minister without consulting with the party executive committee. Facts available have revealed that Barr. Omotosho acted on the instruction of a former governor of the state.

“It befuddles us that it is in this age and time, when the rule of law holds sway, that Barr. Omotosho and his co-travellers would embark on such desperation journey to nowhere, insulting the personality of Olumulia and by extension, APC in Ekiti State and Nigeria with such baseless allegation.

“Assuming they did so out of ignorance or blind loyalty to somebody, the police should have been well-informed and more professional in their handling of the matter.

“It is not only annoying, but at the same time laughable. Evangelist Olumilua could not have been holding an illegal meeting in his own house against his own party.”
